Won this black Om1 (120583304424) on evilbay, claimed to be CLA'd by John Hermanson.
I know John is the number one when it comes to classic olys, so my expectations are set high

He did mine and it's nice, but the film advance gears are rough and grind, but word I got from some people here is that is normal with OM-1s, even when new.

Hi Igor.
I bid on this auction too. The same seller had three other OM cameras. I got beat in all of the auctions!
Hope you enjoy your new camera, and let us know how it works.

I've noticed that my OM-1 which was CLA'd recently by John is much the same! It feels smooth enough but sounds slightly rough.

Hmm, I'd qualify my OM4ti film advance a little bit rough compared to my OM1, and OM1 never was CLAd. No complaints to OM1 in this department - can't wait to see how my new black OM1 stacks up against.I've noticed that my OM-1 which was CLA'd recently by John is much the same! Maybe not rough ... more like crunchy!

OM1 rough wind on
OM1 rough wind on
I was going to mention this in my previous post on this thread. I just traded a J12 lens to william lewis for an OM1 with the standard 50 1.8 lens. I really like the OM1 a lot. I think I am on the slipperry slope here.
My OM1 is a very late md with no prism foam. I think the wind on is crunchy too. I may try some new grease in the film advance gears. Also there is a definite twang from the mirror lever spring when the shutter is released. Is this also characteristic of the OM1? I can even hear the spring ringing if I trip the shutter with the mirror locked up.
I am not complaining, just wondering since this is my first OM. Did I just say first OM? Thanks
Steve

I've just had to rush to the cupboard and fire the shutter on my OM-1 thanks to you!
Yes ... it does 'twang!'
Funny how you never notice these things until someone points it out!

Speaking of OM-2Ns I've just disovered that mine really doesn't like alkaline batteries ... I've just ordered some SR44 silver oxides on line.
You can put a fresh set of LR44's in it and the meter will read accurately ... recheck the camera a week or two later without even having used it and the meter is nearly a stop out!

FrankS,
Nice buy on the OM2n. You can't go wrong for $25. I want to get a black bodied OM2
next. I note that you highlighted "my first OM". Looks like more to follow here.

Well, I received parcel yesterday. Inside rested comfortably OM1n in black, wrapped in bubble bag. Beautiful camera is aging gracefully and still looks good, some brassing on corners even adds to the character.
Good news first - camera was definitely CLAd by John Hermanson in 2008, his sticker resides on the film chamber inside. Camera was modified for modern batteries. Camera feels like... well, precise picture taking machine, all controls are smooth and viewfinder big and clean.
Some bad news - shutter was erratic in the beginning, second shutter curtain either didn't close or timed 1/60sec (to my ear). I know it sometimes happens to mechanical shutters due to inactivity, so I clicked away for some 10 minutes and shutter went to normal - all shutter speeds sound accurate (save for 1sec which is more 2sec, if you ask me).
Question is, what are chances shutter will misbehave if camera left for some time (weeks) in storage? I have no idea if I should contact the seller for shutter issue - anyway international shipping excludes possibility to return camera, and I actually like the camera!

I've been told by a certain famous Contax camera repairman that a newly CLA'ed camera should be used after a cla in order get the new lube settled in otherwise it may have problems. Perhaps your OM camera was cla'ed and then set on a shelf. I'd guess that it will be okay and remain okay after you use it a bit and that week-long inactive periods will not be a problem. It may be a good idea to dry fire the camera many times after inactive periods before loading film.
One thing that did come to my mind reading your original post, is that your black camera has a black battery cap. I remember reading a John H. post where he says that he replaces black caps with chrome ones as part of his service because of electrical contact problems with the black painted caps. But that may have been only for the electronic OM bodies only. I don't know.
Enjoy your new OM!

Black OM-1n - a lovely camera to hold and use.
The paintwork has a peculiar quality to it that seems to be a different from a lot of other cameras.
Hope yours continues to work - and produce super results. I've only used mine for colour.

actually there is one issue - meter underexposes 1 stop (maybe even 1.5). Not a big issue - remedy is to set 200iso when I use 400iso film, but I wonder if it's plain malfunction, or was done on purpose in CLA process, for example adjusted for 2 series screen maybe?
