I can´t agree more. I nearly puked when Uruguay went on at the expense of Ghana. That one can gain an advantage by blatant cheating, and in the WC quarter finals no less, is a great loss to the sport. Think of what lesson this teaches the kids around the world?
 
Don't worry - there is a long line of handball teachers in football. Suarez is just the latest. I am sure the kids got the message. Suarez was born a year after Maradona's Hand of God play, so while he didn't witness it, I am sure someone filled him in on what he missed.

Regarding Suarez's hand, I think football is such a wonderful game 'cause it's like the real life; not always fair and far from being perfect. I love it!
 
With all due respect, I can't follow all this BS for Suarez handball. Doing an open handball as a last resource is a time-honored technique. You pay the penalty, red card, and that's all. It's not at all uncommon in football.

This is not Maradona's "hand of god" concealed handball, or Schnellinger's concealed handball in a similar situation in the Uruguay-Germany match in the 1966 World Cup. This was a desperate but not illegitimate resource.

Ghana strikers had the whole goal area at his disposal - why head into Suarez? And if they had converted the penalty it was game over for Uruguay.

Uruguay did not play well - but they had a lot of luck, a good goalkeeper and class in the penalty kicks.
 
Without the famous events like the hand of Maradona, the English (non?)-goal of 1966, football memorablia would not be the same. It is also what makes the game the greatest on earth and as monkeypainter said, life is not fair.
As such, football is like life, full of tragedies and happiness. Why make it perfect ?

I think what makes the World Cup interesting is that it is not like life, because for once the small countries of the world have a chance to beat the big countries. Usually the small countries get plowed under. 😉

Both were wild and wonderful games.
If Ghana does not give up that goal, then the penalty kick scenario never occurs.
If The Orange do not lose the key defender to a pre-game injury, does Brazil get that easy goal? We do not know.
Like life, the game of football is full of if-thens.
Now, Uruguay goess on without Suarez.
I am rooting for the Orange to win it all ...
 
Ok ok - I've had dinner and now I am happy. Tomorrow is another day and fortunately there is more football to drive us all a little crazy.

😀 You can say that again, we are happy as three-tailed dogs. Fortunately, in the pitch it's just 11 against 11.

Montevideo is blue-sky madness right now. I grabbed a few shots before the game downtown, hope to post tomorrow.

Anything can happen with this team. I've never seen so much luck in a football game!

This is all true, but perhaps it is time to revisit the punishment for choosing to violate the rules of play in this fashion. Because frankly, dirty tactics are boring and disappointing and that shouldn’t become the spirit of football.

After much contemplation I have decided to support the guays, Para and Uru. I almost proved to be a jinx today with Uru, but we are still alive!!

Big upset coming as Para sends Spain packing tomorrow!!!
 
Yeah, football is a weird sport where the better team will usually wins. But not always. Yeah it is a little bit dishonest, a little random, there is room for cheats. You can do everything right, and lose. Just like life. A poor man from Ghana or Uruguay can dream, but he's usually put back in his place, just like life. Thats why people love it.

Americans want a fair game, a place where the better man, the biggest effort always wins in the end. Thats not life, thats a Holywood movie.

Today I sent my father an e-mail, talking about the Argentina-Germany match, in a serious way, analyzing things, trying to think which team has which options to win, and after considering the true Germans' strengths, and finishing my e-mail, I wrote as a goodbye: "Daddy I'm scared!". I imagine him smiling... I'm really scared... It's almost 11AM and I haven't gone to sleep: I can't, I don't feel tired... In five hours we could see the new world champion play and win... I think each team is as good as the other one. Let's hope no matter what happens we have beautiful soccer and lots of goals... Messi has made the world wait a lot!
