Well I don't really shoot brick walls, that often...I think? Obviously my better half think I do. She drew this. I suspect it's not only a comment on brick-wall shooting, but also on how it is to live with a photo nut in general ;)

I'll ad that she's part front-end web developer (code monkey) and part designer/retoucher for a major TV channel and likes to droodle both funny and more stylized things in her own time. She draws almost exclusively Wacom tablet (Cintiq) Anyone recognize the situation?

Here's one of my shots of her at work.

When I studied photography (a thousand years ago) the common wisdom was not to photograph subjects with a bsrick wall behind them. But brick walls can have texture. With a lens that has a pleasant boken a brick wall as a background can be pleasing.

"But honey, clearly I got to evaluate the different distortion characteristics between the 50 0.95, 50 1.2, 50 1.4 and 50 1.8. It's crucial for my success as a sleeping-kitty-on-couch-photographer!!"

Test shots with different lenses, filters, bracketing, it's all part of the game. I guess we all do it from time to time and learn from it. Or at least we hope we do.

My wife looking at prints from a roll of film: Why did you take all those shots of the same thing? That's a waste of money!!! sigh

I've resorted to a brick wall after modifying an I-50 to focus close-up and wide-open, and too infinity.

Focus test. J-3 modified for close-focus on a Leica. Optimized for F1.5.

Nina will ask, "Why another pictures of the leaves?", Nikki- "Mom, it's just another lens test."

Funny! I think some years ago I made some tests with brick walls, but most of them were not about distortion...

Nice drawing and sweet girl!

Cheers,

Juan

Ha!! I've got a pair of clippers and cut my own too. It's a big savings these days, definitely more money for gear.

I avoid brick walls because all of my favourite lenses seem to exhibit an extrordinary amount af barrel distortion ... and I don't want to know about it!

Try shooting a 35mm 1.2 Nokton square on wide open at a brick wall fairly close and you'll get a real shock!

I like how you're shooting a brick wall and she's got the n3rd teeshirt and is checking a (smart) phone! What a nerdy pair! Very funny!

Love the shot of your wife at work!
Stikes me you have another subject to photo as well as the brick wall!
Incidentally I just realised that I've nearly 20 photos of bricks/walls/windows from my last shooting days. But then there are brick walls and brick walls!

Yes, we're definitely nerds...and proud of it! She actually have a t-shirt like that too in real life! (To keep this photo gear centric - look at that foggy low-contrast cellphone lens and smeary jpg engine!)

So, are brick walls best shot in colour, or is there something to be said for shooting them in Black and White. They are not all Red, some may be painted.

I'm feeling inspired. It's a cloudy dreary day here in Germany and I feel like going out to shoot Brick Walls!!

Clearly brick walls can be interesting. For instance, colorful graffiti, or a wall from a bullet-ridden city like Sarajevo. History is in the walls, literally! ;)
