Sonnar or Nokton

I do not want to work closer than 5 feet. This means a 75/90/135.

I dislike photos with a 50 shoved two feet from a face. Yuck.

Is your Sonnar optimized for 1.5 or 2.8?

I'm still playing around with mine, but I like the look at around f4 with a little distance to the subject, say around two meters. There is a separation between subject and background, but most of the subject is in focus. F2.8 works great too; it's just a matter of personal preference about background blur.

1.5 is still a challenge for me, especially working close. There is just so little in focus (even when you focus perfectly) that I get a little weak kneed.

Thanks Helen...I was a bit concerned at first, but, after using it, it can be conquered with a little wisdom in subject choice. It is a great people lens at f/1.5 to f/2 for shallow DOF, and a great everything else lens at f/2.8 on.... And that is just how I use it... f/2.8 on for everything but people, where I want shallow DOF and wonderful OOF backgrounds.

I'd say you've mastered the focusing, Peter. Nice and sharp. Great shots of the family, too.

I'm suprised how far ahead of the Nokton the Zeiss is in this poll!

I personally prefer the Sonnar but I would have expected the Nokton to do better than it has.

First question: why 50?

Most people agree that a longer lens gives better perspective, and you'll get shallower depth of field for free. I'd recommend either an 85/2 or 135/whatever it is FSU bottle. The 135 is uncommonly sharp.

That is true. I have serenar 85/2 and it is extremely sharp at ~f4. Better DOF for portraits

Performance wise the CV is probably ahead of Sonnar wide open, but sharpness isn't everything. The Sonnar is special.
