Just watched Dirk's video at Japan Exposures on this little "digital Holga"

Seems very interesting, in that when you move it while taking a still, it doesn't seem to blur, but keeps things sharp, but induces wild distortion.

Another interesting thing, noticeable in his train photo is that you can get it to distort the top part of the frame, while keeping the bottom part (tracks, in this case) normal.

How can it do this?

Are these available in the US yet or where is the cheapest shipping for this little interesting thing?

There were a couple of threads on this about a year ago. There is no shutter in the camera per se apparently. The sensor is scanned line by line, givng the distortions you mention. A member then was going to try several hacks but I don't remember him getting back to RFF with them. I think at that time the camera had to be ordered from Japan. You might try a search.

this camera was a boom sometime ago in Singapore.. now selling used for about S$70 (or about $50) in almost mint conditions with all its freebies.. wanna give it a try when i got the extra pocket money.. it can double up as motion clip maker.. ha! 😀

That was me. I didn't end up hacking it because I simply sold it after taking a couple of dozen shots with it while it was still new. The camera didn't interest me enough to start investing time and energy into "hacking" so I simply let it go.
It's a peculiar little cam and the "Lartigue effect" is there, although I wasn't able to recreate it or make anything interesting with it.
I've seen some people successful with it though, no frills lo-fi photography. Seen peculiar projects. But my logic after spending a day or two with it was that I simply couldn't imagine a situation where I would give this camera a priority over any of the others that I use when I leave the house, be it digital or analogue large or compact.
Oh yeah, none of those couple of dozen shots was a keeper, so I don't even have anything to show for it 🙂

It is a pretty fun little toy. I got one and modified it to vignette heavily so the pictures have a bit of a Holga vibe to them.

Oh, this is called "Lartigue" effect! My simple Ricoh P&S also does same, especially pronounced when panning. It has same "purple coating" like this Yashica.

p.s. ad on car translates as "boring holidays ?"

I have one of these, I got it form Japan shipped to Australia for about $90. I have been using my LX3 alot but should really take the Yashica out more as some results are interesting thus far. I like the B&W mode, and I up the exposure more and it goves a hard contrasty look, lgood for some street style shots. The colours are kinda nice, almost muted like old film. I would post some pics from it here but I have to work out how to first 🙂

Some shots from Yashica EZ F521

Some shots from Yashica EZ F521

Low-Fi Sunset, the reflected light may be from the plastic lens, reminds me of my old film cameras:
