They don't really say how their pre-order works. Does it create an accurate list based on when someone put their order in?

Not to mention none of the other small digital cameras look to be even half as durable construction wise. Nex, m4/3, and X1 all are a bit too plastic-y in my opinion.

Great idea to drop $1200 on a camera you've never seen, which hasn't even been reviewed, and where you know absolutely nothing about how well the trick viewfinder works and how fast it focuses.
I saw and handled a prototype at photokina, and was well impressed, but I'd be crazy to buy one until I knew how a production model worked. How stupid can 'early adopters' get? This really is a case of buying 'bragging rights' -- unless it doesn't live up to your expectations, in which case you'll be buying 'moaning rights' (at quite a price).
(Obviously, 'you' in the sense of 'one' or 'anyone crazy enough to buy an unproven camera, sight unseen' -- not a personal 'you'.)

The disclaimers don't make it any less insulting.
You're going to have to rely on the "stupid early adopters" to get accurate reviews, because corporately sponsored "review" sites are near worthless, and on niche cameras they can take forever.
There have been enough specs that are completely technologically believable for some of us to pre-order, and at least my dealer has a refundable policy up toward closer to the release time, when I fully expect a few previews and sample images to have been released. You might decide that's too much of a risk on unproven technology to make the leap of faith yourself, but don't insult those who do, because almost every recent product in any category has had people pre-order, and it would be incredibly arrogant to label them all as stupid.

Nah. I'm a little intrigued by this camera, but I think I'll wait for reviews/results. That, and a used model to show up for $700ish.

That was not my intention, but you probably won't believe that. Nor will you believe that reviews are far from always 'corporately sponsored'. I'd completely agree that reviews can take an absurdly long time, but then again, if I'm reviewing something, I'd rather try it properly for a while than rewrite a press release.
Incredibly arrogant to label ALL early adopters as stupid? Of course, and I don't actually think that ALL of them necessarily are stupid. But I've yet to see much evidence that they are buying anything other than bragging rights, and quite honestly, yes, I do suspect anyone who orders an expensive non-essential, a toy, on the basis of technical specifications alone, of having more money than sense.

I won't be buying the camera (let alone pre-ordering it) as I recently bought an E-P2.
Seems a bit harsh to chastise folks who pre-order new products. Most reputable dealers have reasonable return programs. If you know once you take the camera out of the box that it's not for you, I imagine you won't be out too much $$$.
I'd check that out before I pre-ordered anything though.

Not for me. I'll wait until the early adopters have worked out the bugs, and Fuji has worked out how to make an interchangeable lens version, and then I might consider it. Until then the GF1 will meet my digital needs, which are few these days. I think my wife uses the GF1 more than I do.
I won't pre-order until a dealer I actually like has it on their site. Also, I'm thinking this is not going to be a camera that you need to pre-order due to unavailability. I think Fuji will be able to deliver these. I can wait... even if I have more money than sense.

Fair enough. I tend to forget about return programs, because it means that they have to sell on an ever-so-slightly secondhand camera (possibly incompetently pawed) as 'new'.

I don't think I would call most of the early adopters of the X100 "stupid", Roger.
Optimistic, certainly.
But I also think they are justified in that optimism; Fuji has made a few digi-cams prior and while I would agree that buying one on spec is a gamble, I think it's a fairly safe bet.
Still a gamble, though.
I am not pre-ordering this camera (as much as I like what I've seen/read about it) as I just don't have an idle $1200 right now.

Small shops that have good enough customer service to offer return policies are normally good about discounting returned products. Now if you meant bigger stores, I agree.
