My New Sony Nex-3 Body!

It seems that getting the 16mm lens is better than buying the camera alone.

Do you lose AF with other type of lenses with the NEX?

The new firmware allows AF with Alpha mount lenses, but it's still completely manual focus with other lenses.

Hi Raid, couple of months ago the local Costco had the 3 (in-store deal) with both lenses for $599. I think you can easily sell unused lens to get a body price of ~$300ish or lower depending on what you can sell the lens for.

The 5 does have a different body feel, kind of a grip, and takes some accessories (from Sony, and 3rd parties) that the 3 doesn't, so try to check them out in a store if you get a chance.

For more than one reason..

For starters, with exception of image stabilisation, the 16mm allows every bell and whistle of the NEX to be used. Also, it's so much easier to use for snapshot work than manual focus lenses; the AF is virtually instantaneous and spot on. In practice, I use it a lot more than I use my M-mount lenses.

And last but not least, the images from the 16 are a lot better than they look.. Well, let me explain. The 16 renders a scene quite different from what I was used to with my Nikon or Voigtlander lenses. So at first, I was not overwhelmed by the 16. But after a while, I got to learn its stronger and weaker points, and the images are now as good/bad as I make them with any other lens.

I have a Pentax-K 17mm 4.0 fisheye, and a Canon 7.5mm 5.6 circular fisheye. These should be OK with the NEX-3. Right?

That's a 7.5mm Canon FD lens, right? So you need a Canon FD Nex adapter.
Does the rear cell protrude back into the body, with that lens? That's a Nex issue with the FL 19mm F3.5 with the Canon Adapter B lens I have. It dosen't fit. And you will need a Pentax K adapter for the 17mm. That Takumar should be sweet on the Nex! You should try your 21mm Rokkor on the Nex, if it'll fit.

Good Luck, and Have Fun.

Dan,

I'm also thinking of picking one of these babies up. Are you able to fire the flash with it folded down? Will it also fire when it's about half-way up?

Thanks.

I can't seem to get get the flash to fire at all, in manual mode (the only way I can use it with my old lenses). Maybe you need a Sony lens with the automation to use the flash? Anybody know more about this?

The FD 7.5 lens does not have any rear cell protruding into the camera body. It is a retro-focus lens, so it should fit. The FL 19mm is a non-retro lens. The 21mm is also a non-retro lens.

The Tamron 24mm/2.5 is very sharp and small, and it should fit the NEX with two adapters. It will be a 36mm lens. The possibilities seem to be great. Is there a Rollei QBM adapter for the NEX? I have several Zeiss lenses in the Rollei mount.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, Dan. I appreciate it. Too bad it didn't work though. The local shops don't have this in stock so I can't try this one out.

My NEX is such a great low light performer that I have never even tried the flash. The anti blur mode is amazing in darkness.

Same here. I can shoot in near total darkness at F1.2 and ISO 12,800.

I'll have to play with the anti blur mode. Hope it works with old lenses.
