DigitalRev Answers The Question: "Why Leica M?"

It was interesting, and very well made, but I thought he left out almost everything I find so special about Ms. Instead, it was more like the benefits of carrying a small camera, and information about rangefinders in general. There were a few bits about Leica specifically, but I found that most of his comments applied to most rangefinders, not just Leica Ms.

Kai is just great IMO ... if he reviewed the latest MacDonalds buger meal it would be worth watching!

Definitely preaching to the choir and interesting to note that at no stage did he mention the cost of joining this particular choir. :D

Interesting how to simultaneously hold an opened umbrella and use both hands to operate a Leica ! I have to try that ! :D

Thinking back on Kai's video now makes me wonder; some of the photos he was shown to be taking were done in the following manner:
  • Spot a photo opportunity or subject
  • pass them by so that you're on the other side of them
  • turn around and quickly focus and shoot

Now, this wasn't the method for ALL the photos he took but I saw that method nearing the end of the vid mostly. I just wonder if using that "SURPRISE !!" method (for the lack of better naming) doesn't contradict what Kai was saying about the Leica M in the first place. The whole "unobtrusiveness" of the camera...

Cheers,
Dave

^^ nearly all of his subjects appeared to me as having realized being photographed so not to much unobtrusiveness ...

He's a little goofy (I think on purpose), but I've liked every video from DigitalRev that I've seen. There's one where he gives a couple of DSLRs the torture treatment to show that despite being sophisticated electromechanical devices, they are actually very tough.

I bet we won't see him torture test an M, though :).

I love digital rev. (and the analog rev). Watch every video that comes up.

While I don't religiously watch digitalrev, I do usually like the videos I've seen.
Strangely for me, I wasn't too into this video. I'm not sure I can even articulate why (maybe i'm worried a flood of people will rush to M's now that Kai said they are "cool" and raise prices )

I liked another video by Kai where he uses an M9, but it wasn't the focus of the video.

I do agree that this was different from their other digital rev videos. Maybe a little different because he was showing something he does truly love.

Kai rules! I'm with Keith, I would love to see him do a comparison between McDonal's and BK or anything for that matter. He is funny.:)

BTW, don't take his photos or style or invisibility too far...he was after all, walking around with someone holding a video camera on him and he was talking directly to it. So, it's not too hard to see why people are not surprised when he takes their picture!

I think people watch too many videos and have lost the reality of the moment. They actually believe that the video was done "undercover" when the truth is far from it.:p

I especially like the comparo with the D700. The M bodies are works of art while the Nikon cameras are ugly blobs IMO. And I can say that because I have used those ugly blobs ever since they started making them and still have one of them. Not because I like them, they are great cameras, just ugly.:p Now give me a Nikon rangefinder any day.

Dave, you are 100% correct ! :)
