Plustek Mac OS X Lion problems!

Very frustrating day today.

My Plustek 7600i won't work with Mac OS X Lion.

The only option, apparently, is to wait until "late" August for an updated software package from Silverfast, which (since I'm "upgrading" from the original scan software) will probably cost around $200.

Vuescan, the other software option, will work with Lion, but needs Plustek drivers, which are only PowerPC-able.

In other words, Mac OS X Lion has killed my scanner...period.

My choice is to either downgrade to OS X Snow Leopard, or buy the new Silverfast version (if, and when, it's available...no firm date).

I'm pissed, because I already invested in some Lion software (aside from the OS purchase), and Plustek, the hardware manufacturer, insists Silverfast is the driver vendor (again, no driver upgrade...just their "new, expensive" software upgrade).

Argh!

I guess it's EOS 5DmkII and SilverEfex Pro for the time being...maybe forever, I don't know. I'm in an ugly film place right now...:bang:
 
One option is to use "boot camp," install Windows XP, Vista, 7 etc. on your hard drive, and run your Plustek scanner using Windows software.

I'm purposely keeping an old Mac-Mini around, that's running Snow Leopard, as a scanning machine. At least until I see how good Silverfast 8 is.

Sage advice not to jump into a new revision right away.
I'll probably hang onto snow leopard until we're well into Lion
or even the following revision...OSX Alley Cat 😀
 
I decided to wait for all patches of printer, scanner, cameras, etc to come out before upgrade to Lion. Everything works fine on 10.6.8, perhaps Lion patch is coming too.

The process is the same as windows upgrade, most of things won't work after the
 
From here: VueScan 9 x64 runs on Windows 7 x64, Windows Vista x64, Windows XP x64, Mac OS X 10.5 to 10.7 (Lion) and 64-bit Linux.

SF sucks. Not only with being late to the party. I'm not saying VS is perfect, but at least this guy is consistent to his idea of user interface and cares about his product. Not to mention the price.

OS Lion killed Nikon Scan and my Spyder2express for me. Now I got to buy a Spyder3 just because Colorvision won't update its software. As for Nikon Scan not working, Vuescan seems to work flawlessly with my Nikon 9000 scanner. Are you sure Vuescan doesn't include the drivers for your Plustek? If not you might be able to get the Plustek drivers by installing the trial version of SF (when it comes out).

Don't know what I was thinking when I upgraded to OS Lion on day 1 on a whim. Overall I don't think it's bad but a few things bug me like the hidden Harddisk.
 
I upgraded to Lion and my licensed copy of silverfast wouldn't run, after being brushed off by the silverfast support ("no upgrade available until late this year", yadayada) they lost me as a customer, "Its not a damn 'upgrade' i need, it is for you to fix your broken software that does't run with the Current OS".

I immediately purchased Vuescan which does a fine job under lion with my Minolta Dimage III.
 
I think both Plustek and Lasersoft have done a pretty poor job. Just before Lion came out I asked Plustek about drivers as I was about to order a new scanner, their response was you need to speak to Lasersoft, the drivers are nothing to do with us. Even on the release day Lasersoft were still claiming Apple would relent and make Rosetta optional again. It seems neither company wants to take responsibility.
 
I'm waiting until iCloud is running and stable (probably December or January?)


If Plustek refuses to supply an Universal Binary driver for OS X, I will dust off my circa 1996 MacBook Pro and use it with Vuescan.

I was at a Yard Sale a couple of weeks ago and almost bought a G4 Mac Mini with a monitor and keyboard for $125. Now I wish I had. Bare G4 Mac Minis go for about $125-$180 on ebay. Craigslist might be better. While there is no reason not to dual boot if you already own Leopard/Snow Leopard DVD, I'd rather use a dedicated PPC computer than dual boot.


I will never use or buy Silverfast again. I will never recommend Plustek again until they release a Universal Binary driver. I'm quite certain both vendors could care less!

yeah, the only ones to blame here are silverfast.
Everything else on Lion runs fine for me, it seems silverfast really do not care and are just out to sell you an upgrade when they should be supplying a free compatibility fix/upgrade.

Vuescan got my money because the demo version ran fine on Lion and produced good results, i was happy to see that they were well prepared for the new OS.

FYI ... software developers have all the time in the world (6 months usually) to get ready for a new OS release as they have access to pre-release OS versions, if a software vendor is too lazy to test their software on the new OS before its official release then they deserve to lose their clientele.

So it's "my way or the highway" with Silverfast.

I have. Time Machine backup of my Snow Leopard system...time to do some research. Anyone care to explain how to boot with a different OS using an external drive?
 
My plastic 7600i is working just fine under Lion 10.7 using Vuescan...

There a bunch of guys and gals on here a lot smarter than I am about how to do that, but for me, I made a bootable copy of 10.6.8 using Carbon Copy Cloner and installed it on an external HD that attaches to my MBPro via FW800 cable. MBPro is running Lion (parenthetically I've had zero problems with any software already installed: e.g., VMFusion with Windows XP installed on it; Anonymizer VPN; etc.)

Anyway, all I need to do if I want to boot into 10.6.8 is go into System Preferences, go to Startup Disk, click on it, it will give me 10.6.8 as an option. I click on that puppy, and my machine will restart in 10.6.8. I haven't had to do that but once to test it out because 10.7.1 operates flawlessly. BTW, I'm on the 30 day demo of VueScan with my Epson V500 on Lion.

I purchased a Plustex 7600i in July and got SilverFast 6.6 with it. I found SilverFast very awkward to use and my results were poor, so I continued to use VueScan.

I updated to Lion and I got a free update to SilverFast 8. SilverFast is still very awkward to use and gave me poor results. However, it must have loaded a 64-bit driver as VueScan x64 works, but VueScan x32 hangs when I try a scan.

Plustex really needs to make this driver available directly.

I find SilverFast's different versions and pricing very confusing, and the inability to do multi-sampling with the SE version is a cheap trick to get more money for basic functionality.
