Adox film

Anybody tried the Adox CHS Art film sold by Freestyle in 25, 50, and 100 speed?

I see where it is described as "old school".

I'm thinking about getting some and was also wondering about the best developer for it..

I've used Adox CHS 50 developed in Rodinal and was pleased with the results. Here's a couple of examples. Cheers.

Supposedly Adox and Efke are the same films. I've had good success with Efke 25 in Rodinal 1+50. Real nice, rich tones.

ADOX CHS is exactly the same emulsion from Efke (25-50-100). The first two (25-50) are Orthopan films. The iso 100 version is Panchromatic. They are all single layer films, in fact a copy of Dr. Schleussner/Dupont from the 50's. Best type developer: Beutler A+B; FX-1 or Rodinal (all high acutance type developers).

The films are soft in emulsion and can have easily reticulation. So you have to process them carefully.

Lovely, lovely films, but trickier to handle than the mainstream products. Well worth experiencing. I'm particularly fond of the CHS25 which is just gorgeous when you can take the time and effort needed to get the best out of it.

Also very nice processed as transparencies using the dr5 process. Beautiful projected and in a backlit viewer for stereos. Grain less

Currently my favorite film.
This one is 6x6 CHS 50.

I develop anything with Rodinal 1+50. No exception with this one.

Willy Beutler developed Neofin in the fifties for the (at this time) new and revolutionary ADOX films.

I have some 25 speed in two of my Minolta SRT bodies right now. I will be interested to see the results.

Perhaps I should use the Beutler Developer, I can mix some up easily.

Love the 25, been shooting it for years, and lately the 100. Now coated on a PET base, so be careful to load in subdued light to prevent light piping. Otherwise I've not had any changes in my exposure or times.

I ordered the CMS 20 and its developer but Freestyle is currently out of the CHS till later this month..

Specifics on developing? I have been doing Rodinal 1+50, agitate at start and then every 2 mins I tried, recently every 3 minutes... still find it leaning on over-developed with Tri-X and PanF. A few of the images are great, but the sky is a touch too dark and grass is too dark (my best clues to overdeveloped).

I got 4 rolls of Efke/Adox to use, so when I develop I want them to be such a workout afterwords (in the darkroom).

Adox CMS 20 is my favourite film. Unfortunately the light in the Pacific Northwest does not permit me to shoot it as my main film year round....but there is nothing better if you like charcoal blacks and amazing mid-tone variation.

I can agree. Problem with CMS 20 is the low speed. To get best tonal range and shadow detail the sensivity is only ISO 4-6.

But there is an excellent alternative with much higher speed:
Agfa Copex Rapid developed in the dedicated Spur Modular UR new developer.
ISO 40, excellent tonality, outstanding resolution and sharpness, very fine grain (but not as grainless as CMS 20).
Agfa Copex Rapid in 35mm, developed in Spur Modular UR new, surpasses my medium format shots with Plus-X, Fomapan 100 and FP4.
And it is significantly cheaper per shot.

Hi Will,

this film has been available for about 2 1/2 years in 35mm and for about 1 1/2 now even in 120 format.

So you can use it in 35mm and 120!
In 35mm you get medium format quality, and in 120 almost LF format quality.
But only with the dedicated Spur Modular UR new developer (Part A1 + Part B), which is designed for this special film.
It is a "closed imaging system", like Adox CMS and Adotech / Spur developers.

Please don't rape this film with other developers, results will be inferior compared to Spur Modular UR new.
The Spur developers (Adox Adotech is also made by Spur for Adox) are using a unique technology, completely different to other low contrast developers like POTA or Technidol, RLC etc..
I have compared them and by far the best results I got with Spur Modular UR new.
