The version II should come with its hood (small, compact, screw in hood).

The hood for the version II works quite nicely on my version I Elmar 50/2.8.

I have the old 5cm 3.5 Elmar which I often use on a Standard Leica, and I for the first version Elmar 5cm 2.8 which is in perfect optical condition as the front element has been changed professionally. Both are good lenses, and I amnot even tempted anymore to get 2.8 Elmar-M even though I read lots of praises about its performance.

I did not know that there exists a 3.5 Elmar M before. This is interesting.

I use my V1 50mm F2.8 quite a bit, and I love it. I did put Dymo labeling tape around the -front- part of the lens barrel; this is straight from the supplement Leitz provided in the original M5 instruction book. The lens can collapse(some) but not enough to damage the meter arm in M5. Very clever, those dudes from Wetzlar.

I love my V1 Elmar. Also have the 90mm F4, but I haven't used that one as much. But I do like it as well. Build quality is truly amazing, on both of them. Will definately get out and use the 90mm more in the future. Both lenses have the Dymo tape.

I did not know that there exists a 3.5 Elmar M before. This is interesting.

Leica made the f3.5 Elmar 50 for the first batch of M3's in 1954. Later it was "boosted" to f2.8. It is not scarce as such (about 10 000 made) but for some reason it can be difficult to find, though when you do, they are usually in good shape. Probably were used for a brief while until the f2.8 came out (and the Summarit in M-mount) and then relegated to the bottom of a deskdrawer and forgotten,

I've got the 3.5 (coated) and 2.8 v. 1 versions, both in LTM. The 50/2.8 LTM is new to me, and I've been pleased with the results in both color and bw -- it appears to be a sharp lens, even if it isn't the latest version:

The collaps system have certain kind of bayonet which have no lock for shooting position. So, when turning stops "above" full aperture, the collaps-bayonet move too? Is my Elmar in order?

I've enjoyed my 50/3.5 Elmar from 1956 and continue to shoot with it - currently attached to an MP. Occasional flare was an issue with this uncoated lens but I found a hood and it's been fine since. Here are a few examples...

The Elmar 50mm f/3.5 M-version is a very nice and sharp lens, better than the "red scale" screwmount version.

Leica M2, Elmar 50mm f/3.5, Tmax400.
