Shutter Delay when pressed

Hi everyone:

I just got a new (to me) Epson R-D1 camera and when I take pictures I've noticed something happening which I hope someone can tell me if it's normal.

Whenever I leave the camera on, and I wait a couple of minutes between pictures, I'll press the shutter and the picture wont click. The lever is already cocked. Whenever I click it, the needles will move around like it does at start.

I should mention also that this was shooting in Aperture Mode. I can't recall if it happened while I was shooting in Manual. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

Was the red LED (I think it is in the back ) flash? I found the RD-1 slow, when it wrote to FLASH. And of course, the larger the file, the slower it was.

And the camera was frozen until the FLASH-write finished.

So check which format is selected, the larger the slower.

The rd-1 has a sleep mode when left alone for an amount of time. Completely normal to have to hit the shutter button once to wake, once more to shoot.
 
actually i don't think it can be turned off. but you can set it to 20 minutes. i don't know if it's still eating battery or not though - even though the led and meter led's are off i'm never quite sure so i usually just turn the camera off with the switch.
 
agree the battery consumption is pretty rough - the battery meter seems to drain by a notch every time i look at it. thankfully new batteries are available anywhere for around 15$ for a pair of 1600mah's.

even makes you look more like a film shooter to other people when you open up your camera and push in the film canister looking battery.
 
When I got my camera it had an Epson battery, 2 unbranded 3rd party ones and an energizer.

At least one of the unbranded 3rd party ones seemed knackered, like just out the charger to dead in 10 shots. The Epson seems good so I presume it can't be the original and the Energizer was pretty good too. I've since bought another Energizer, anyone using other 3rd party batteries they'd recommend? I'd pay the money for a genuine Epson but don't see me finding one of those anytime soon.
 
i believe the camera were slept, and every time you wake it up, it will always do the start routine, you need to wait untill the counter needle stop turning and then you can take picture.

This behaviour is there in Manual mode as well. if you have your card almost full, then this start waiting time is shorter as needle need to travel less. Worst case is if your card empty, can take 2-3 second before you gain control of the camera.

I can say, this is one of the bad side of this camera, i was expecting rd1 to respond as fast as possible for candid (assume, i put it on my bag, take it out for instant taking picture, but..). I need to live with that, so do you.

Battery? Prepare some spares like other suggestion. It eats battery even when it sleep.

I've bought a vbhw battery and a blumax.
The first forless than 7 euros, the latter for about 20 euros.
They last for 80-100shots max (raw+jpeg) while the original one I own lasts for 40-50 shots. I'd suggest you to go for the vbhw but i cannot tell the quality standards, I could I've been lucky with mine. Blumax seems better bult. I'd avoid "no brand" since they can give you troubles (blank frames, shutter jam) due to weak energy burst wich is needed to shoot and register images.
Anyway I always carry 3 batteries. Last time I shoot 3 gigs of images, I needed them all.

May be my shooting style is different but I always turn it off until i see what potential, then i turn it on 30 seconds(or whatever it takes to start up). Then raise it up, compose shot everything very quick. And I turn it off again. Battery seems to last much longer this way.

Thanks for all your great replies... From listening to your feedback, it seems like I should try to adjust the sleep delay timer to as long as possible. And perhaps periodically half pressing the shutter just so I could reset the delay.. I'm planning on shooting an all day wedding affair with this. How many batteries should I planning on buying? I'd like to not buy too many batteries so if anyone can link me to a better brand or actual battery I'll be happy to take his or her recommendation. Thank you!
 
The sleep mode works rather good at saving battery juice. I've left my RD1 'on' over night a few times, and only lost a bit of battery time.

That said, when out shooting I've tended to just switch it off. The 'half-tap' on the shutter button has never become ingrained with me.
