My IIIa camera body and case!
Sent this morning to RichW a relatively new member to RFF but who is posting and into the gallery as well.

RichW lives in GB (London) and it seemed to me that a IIIa would possibly 'move him on' rangefinder and photographically. We have exchanged several pm and I am happy that the camera has a home where it might be used. I hope it feels as good in his hands as it did in mine.

Disappointing for everyone else who put in a bid but I only had one to give away this birthday. If I am still around this time next year .....

Late in my birthday wishes, but the feeling is the same, Jesse. Glad you had fun finding a home for your Leica. Hopefully RichW will give it all the exersize it needs. Capa cent' anni!

Been meaning to reply to this thread, I have spoken to Jesse and thanked him for his most generous gift. The camera looks and feels great! Jesse even supplied the original case. Gave it a test drive down in Greenwich today, shall post some pics for all to see soon, had a spare Jupiter lens lying about which feels just right on the body.

This is an incredible forum, many thanks again to Jesse, I know there must have been many who were also wishing for the camera and I feel when the time is right I shall pass it on also but not until i've given it a real good workout 🙂. I wish there was currently something I could give but I dont have anything at all really that isn't being used (i'm not really a collector) - so all I can do is promise to try and help contribute towards this amazing forum.

This is probably the coolest thread I have ever seen in my time on the internets. Happy belated birthday wishes to you, Jesse, and congrats on the new Barnack, Rich! My birthday is coming up on the 10th of May and I do believe I'd like to give away a camera or two on RFF as a means to lessen the number of cameras collecting dust and make someone's day a bit brighter. Thanks for the inspiration, and cheers to good people doing good things for the good of others. LOVE THIS!
 
Belated Happy Birthday. Very unusual yet selfless gesture. There is no way I want this camera. I have too many as it is and it would only gather dust. There is nothing that anyone can say or do to change my mind. Keep it away from me!
 
Got my first negs back from the lab a few days ago for the IIIa but have been too busy (trying to get my new career going) to scan them so far, shall get onto it asap. Happy to say they look great! Well what I mean is the camera has performed flawlessly - no issues, well except one minor one but I shall post more about that after I have uploaded a few of my scans. Thanks again to Jesse.

Ok so finally I am back! sorry it took so long to post these images, I have been trying to start a new career as an architectural photographer (not with the Leica IIIa of course 😀, all digital unfortunately) and haven't really had time to concentrate on much else - but alas have been out a couple of times with the IIIa, so here finally are some of the negs from the first roll of film I put through the camera (Jupiter-8 50mm lens, Kodak Tri-X 400)

I am quite happy so far with the results, the only problem I have is that the film seems to slip down a bit and exposes over the sprocket holes slightly, although I have recently found out this is normal for this camera and even Cartier Bresson had the same problem!

Also I find it a little tricky to compose sometimes through the little viewfinder and it always seems as if the image is showing too much of the right side and it isn't exactly how I remember composing it, anyway I realise this is an old camera so it obviously isn't perfectly precise, I may buy an external viewfinder for it to stick on the hotshoe, has anyone else had a similiar problem composing with a Barnack?

Anyway really pleased with the camera!

Bit of a relief - glad the camera seems to be relatively OK for an oldie.
Pleased too that you have posted some pics!
Best of luck with the new project - probably needs a lot of sweat and effort on your part.

In the days of people posting ads for cameras which don't exist and disappearing with the money of the unfortunates who respond - here is something remarkable. A truly altruistic act.
 
Hi,

The answer to the cassette slipping in the body is a felt pad on the end of the cassette. (Or perhaps one each end.) Do a search on corn plasters in RFF and you'll find a thread about it.

Corn plasters are, of course, self adhesive and have a hole in them in the right place...
