If half a dozen RD-1s appeared in the classiffieds for the price you sold mine to me ... I suspect they'd be gone in minutes Pete.
On a more serious note I am totally delighted with this camera and thank you once again mate. Cold in Wellington by now I bet ... I saw the photos on the net of all that snow you had a short while ago. In the twenty years I lived there I never saw a flake of the stuff!

sorry if my r-d1 looks plain, but today i got the jupiter-12 to focus properly by inserting an alum foil between the ltm-to-m adapter and lens.
it now focuses properly but a little ugly....the images are breathtaking...

Exposure count. Should line up perfectly with the "E" (empty) when off. It probably is 1-3 exposures off when on too, but no biggie. Its not like its THAT accurate

Take a look in the camera's setup menus. There's a tool for re-calibrating/aligning the needles on the dial.

BTW, I think it is not supposed to line up with E when off, only when on and empty. But anyway, there's a recalibration function in the menus.

The more I use this RD-1s the more I wonder why I waited so long to get one. For me this is everything the M8 should have been but never was for some reason.
I can't remember the last time I felt so instantly comfortable with a camera and the clunky but fairly easy to use Epson Raw does the best black and white conversions I've ever seen!
I could join the throng and say please Cosina/Epson release a new model with a full frame 18 megapixel sensor ... but I'm not so sure. There's something really unique about the files this camera produces ... the black and white conversions I'm getting from the RD-1s wipe the floor with my D700 IMO.

You can unscrew this lens's aperture/optics module from the focus module and insert the aluminum foil under the area where it screws in. Chances are there's already a shim there too. That way you can use your adapter ring for other lenses without losing your foil! You might have to re-align the aperture numbers though which is a bigger job.

hah this worked perfectly. I had no idea i could re-align it in menu. Neither did a seller on ebay a while back i saw sell for under $1,000 because the dials were all off

Exactly what those of us who use/used this camera have been saying from day 1. It is hard to describe, but it is not a figment of the imagination. Glad you seem to be enjoying it.

Reading this thread, for the first time I miss my RD-1 more than I thought I would. I sold it to help finance an M9 and I don't regret getting that camera, but there was something so nice about the RD-1; yes that 'cool' factor, it wasn't that expensive, did what it was suppose to do with style, was the first 'digital-M', and beautiful B&W files. The only limiting factor was its maximum 6mb, and its delicate rangefinder which wasn't so robust (could go out of alinement more than it should) and was a bit short for fast lenses.

I'm afraid you are all wrong. The RD-1 actually goes here, in "uncool," for the same reason that supercars are uncool. It isn't just that it isn't the camera you would use to photograph Kristin Scott Thomas, it is because the RD-1 is the type of camera that people talk about for way too long at parties, and it isn't cool to talk about your RD-1 for an hour and a half at parties. It doesn't go in "seriously uncool," however, because all of the dentists have replaced their RD-1's with Leica M9's. Next up is the Fuji X100, what do people think?

My girlfriend bought an R-D1 here a few weeks ago and she loves it. I kinda want one too. I love my M8, but I mean... the R-D1 is so damn cool! My favourite feature has to be the analog display at the top.
I also find that the framelines are a tad more accurate... and they come with parallax correction, which the M8 doesn't. The screen is a lot less repulsive than the M8's, and last I heard, there is no IR issue. Neglecting the difference build quality... I feel as if the R-D1 has a much better value than the M8.

Did I mention I've been secretly buying up RD-1s for a year or so now and I have around fifty of them in my cupboard. When RD-1 fever hits the appropriate level I'll be releasing them back into the market to selected recipients at very reasonable prices!

in fact, it does have IR sensibility, only it's not as strong as on the M8. if you shoot ember it'll come out purple, or just shoot some synthetic black fabric next to a black cotton fabric thing and it'll be noticeable. but from a user point of view, it's pretty much never noticeable. which is great if you prefer shooting colour and without any filters, like I do.
