After talking with wife about getting cameras she said if we get her a compact and not horribly expensive Point and Shoot for her then I can save up for what I want. Needs to be compact so she can carry it around often. She also said she wants it to have great quality images. Some video capability would be helpful (which unfortunately rules out X1/2).

Mentioned some things I looked at in the title. Also thought about some of the smaller M43 offerings.

Not sure where you are located, but Amazon USA is selling Panny GF3 with 14mm (28mm equiv) for $329. That will make a nice small package for walkabout camera with video capability, very nice wide angle lens (that lens is tiny, light, and IQ is pretty darn good), and GF3 isn't really difficult camera to use.

Small = Canon PowerShot S100. Middle of the road price.

Bigger sensor = Sony RX100. High price tag.

Small sensor but pretty good IQ = Panasonic DMC-FH8. Not expensive.

GF3 is a good suggestion, though not really too compact in the way most people think of a P&S.

Panasonic lx3 or 5 or wait for rumored lx7 maybe. The panasonics lx series has slightly larger sensor than normal ps, but still smaller than new 1inch class and fast apertures on their zooms.

X10 or x100 are a bit bigger than what would normally thought of as compact.

Has your wife express what her actual size or weight requirements are?

Good luck
Gary

+1
the lx cameras make great images...

It's really hard to tell what the size of the cameras are online for me for some reason. For instance, how big is the RX100 supposed to be?
