This is odd question, but maybe some of you camera guys might have experience here.

We have some little, expletive deleted, vandals that are damaging mailboxes around here. Mine has been damaged twice in a month and I just replaced it today. Neighbors are having problems too.

I thought I'd set up a game camera to capture the @#$%^ in the act, then give the sheriffs department the photos.

I don't want the #$%^& alerted to the camera by flash, so I found that some game cameras have infrared flash. What I'd like to know is if the info I've been reading is correct. Does infrared flash not put out light in the visible spectrum, so that humans won't be aware their photos are being taken?

thanks

Infrared flash won't be visible, but the faces on the photos may be hard to distinguish. I know a guy who did a series for World Press Photos about doggers in UK (people that have impromptu outdoor sex with strangers) using infrared flash. Subject matter is distinguishable, but details not.
Those photos is only reference though, so others may advise otherwise.

In a car? Go for a PLATE shot.

If on foot and they are "batting" them -fill a decoy up with concrete... that'll learn 'em!

Concrete is against the law, I think. But, it sure would be fun.

If I could use regular flash and be sure they couldn't get to the camera to destroy the evidence, that would work. If they are kids who are young enough, the flash would probably scare them away (and hopefully soil their shorts :) ).
