I sold my Nikon D40 to my Dad and took the OM-D back to the store yesterday. I now have no digital kit at all.

I think I must have had a bad copy of the OM-D because it wouldn't consistently get focus on any of the AF modes. For instance, taking pictures yesterday I missed focus on 13 out of 16 pictures of kids sitting relatively still in a brightly lit living room.

Anyways, the question: I'm looking at the following options to order when BH opens up their online store at sundown...

1. Nikon D7000
2. Canon DSLR equivalent (trying to research and find which one).
3. Fuji X100
4. Fuji X Pro 1
5. something else ;)
 
If you're not bothered about wide angle, Nex5n/7.
If you're not bothered about manual focus, XPro 1.
If you've Leica glass and are not bothered about a built in EVF, Ricoh GXR.

If you're frustrated by the not quite perfect available offerings, a couple more years of film. That's the option I'm choosing for the moment. The XPro 1 and selling my Leica glass might be my choice when the new Fuji lenses come out.

Out of that lot, I like the D7000. I like the weather sealing, although I know they don't quite rate it alongside Pentax sealing. Also the dual SD slot really speaks to my paranoid side.

The X100 is lovely, but 35mm lens only would not be for me.

X Pro 1 for me is too pricey for what it is.

Canon EOS, maybe a 5D for full frame goodness, but I prefer the real aperture rings of Nikon.
 
Get whatever makes you happy. I find I like small cameras like the GRD series. I work at a big camera place and I can play with all the fancy new toys, but sometimes I just want a little camera, y'know?

Apparently I lost it again. AF didn't lock on no mater what mode I tried it on. Either the camera was smarter than I am or I had a bad example. Camera store wasn't much help or very nice when I brought it back or I might have tried a different example (or a D7000 from them).
 
your options are all over the map!

think about what you want to photograph...
think about the end results that you are shooting for...
think for yourself about your photography and choose based on that.

Agreed. But research Ricoh GXR :) The 50mm is very good.
 
How are they all over the map? The way I see it there are variations on two choices - a DSLR of a certain level versus a small, versatile carry camera. Eventually I want both a small carry camera like the X100 and a DSLR system for wildlife, sports, etc where the small mirror less don't seem to shine. My question boils down to what I want first and whether the X pro 1 is worth the upgrade for a little more flexibility and arguably a better sensor.

I'll look into the ricoh too Radical.

Also, if you put something else, please let me know what you suggest.

Seems to me u answered your own question just by the way u phrased this answer. Get the 7000 since u already had a d40. Why invest in a different vendors dslr lenses.

Thanks for all the input everyone. According the the poll right now the D7000 is tied with the two fujis (combined) and something else (though only the Ricoh was mentioned as an alternative). I've got 4 hours and 19 minutes till BH opens and if I had to buy right now I would get a D7000 but would continue to wonder about the Fuji option.
 
On thinking about the response I just put down, I think I really want one of the two Fuji’s but I’m afraid I won’t be happy with it because I wasn’t smart enough to get the OM-D to work for me.
 
Oh holy Neopan, Just shoot Film for a couple of months instead of counting the minutes until BH opens......

You are obviously just In a Huge Hurry to buy Something, Anything, So chill out.

So the first question to answer is NOT which particular camera, but which "system". Only when you decide whether to start with the DSLR or start with the compact can you properly sort out which model to choose.

If you choose to start with a DSLR then the D7000 is a leading candidate. If you choose to start with the "compact" then you have more decisions to make, the first being whether a fixed lens camera will do or whether interchangeable lenses are a requirement.
 
Buy a Leica M4 or an M2 & forget digital. Buy some home b&w developing kit, some film & have a blast. You'll never regret it!
 
I voted something else.

And that something else is to wait for Photokina before making any moves. Or buying my GXR, M module and EVF...
