Because of Lomography lot's of young people use film. I have found many young photographers who start out using digital at least look into what film is all about. Many get into using both. There are many film groups on flickr.

If this poll represents a typical cross section of members then it's results are surprising to me. In every single age group film use is higher than digital use.

I wonder if, perhaps there really are, among RFF subscribers more predominately digital users but they are not voting on the poll.

I'm 63 and use film at least 90% of the time.

One of the better polls with interesting results so far -at least to me.

At 47 and after a resurgence of film in my diet, I have sadly resolved to go back to the future and digital most of the time.

... well it seems discriminatory to .... picking on young folk like this

... anyway; what's this predominately digital thing anyway?

The poll result (at the moment only the older generation are marginaly more digital) probably reflects the bias of RFF. I'd say RFF users comprise film fans and old style camera fans (or both). The older generation grew up with those and the manner of taking photographs it requires but can see the advantages of digital. The younger generation on RFF wouldn't be here unless they had some penchant for doing things the old way.

Me, 58, bought my first digital P&S in 2005, but kept to film for taking proper photographs. Since I got the X100 I'm digital only, I cant be bothered with all the processing etc. Most of my work is for the web, I can have a photobook printed of my best work for no more than the cost of processing a couple of rolls.
And I am gradually adapting to having unlimited exposures, rather than making every one count because of the expense. I took over 10,000 this summer, more than I have ever taken in the past 50 years. About five thousand were of one six-day event. Allow, for all the failed experiments —which I would never have attempted if paying for film— and allow also that much of the time I am bracketing for something; if not the exposure then the framing or that elusive moment. Even so, there were over a 1,000 images to consider, and about a hundred to include in a photo album composed as a thank-you to those involved.
For me digital is now good enough in terms of image quality, cheaper, more convnient, and has given my interest in photography a fresh life.

27 and I only shoot film. I sometimes post on instgram but that's about it for digital.

Also, I think that this is not a very good representation of the general population and so the poll is skewed more towards film use.

Ask more general forums the same questions and I would bet more people shoot digital. It's only on rangefinderforum that you get more film users than digital (just look at the classifieds and threads on here).

I"m 61, and I voted "predominantly digital", although that is changing, and I am shooting more film recently than I have in several years, probably more film than digital for the past month. Having just got a Hasselblad 500 CM with three nice Zeiss lenses, I'll probably be doing even more. Once my darkroom is built, it could easily tip decisively in favor or film. I'm basically a black and white photographer, and the b+w photos from my E-M5 are quite good. I'm a better darkroom technician than digital technician, though, and there's an awful lot to say in favor of doing what you know.

Sure, there is likely a positive correlation between an older age and higher film use because that's what us old guys were brought up on, and vice versa. However, there are many old guys switching over to digital, and some young ones trying out film.

The correlation seems to be that the young favor film by a wider margin than do oldsters. However I suspect the sample is highly film skewed, being taken here on RFF.

Digital capture for business with a little B&W film sprinkled in for good measure.

Making more & more photographs with B&W film, especially since purchasing Leica equipment.

I voted "Mostly Digital", which is true. But, when I was a young lad, (15 or so, it was film 100%.... That's all we had)

I now try to shoot around 5-10 rolls a month with home developing. (That's how I got stated.... My Dad built a full darkroom for me and him).
But, my as my eyes get older, AF is a blessing with my Digital... unless I use an adapted lens. :)

Although I have Full MF 35mm camera, I use Wides more with that so the DOF can save my mis-focus.:p

I'm 28...use only film....no lomo.

Photography I truly learned digital (thanks to instant feedback) and have since taken to film. All this in aprox. 9 years time so far.

Still shoot digital if required but my heart lies with film.

I'm 24 and about 4 months ago switched from completly Digital D7000 to Film Zeiss Ikon ZI and happy with the choise.
