Just a quick question for wiser heads.

I'm looking for visual references for a project. Could anyone recommend photographers, photographers of desolate British landscape?

I like Don McCullin's recent landscape work, desolate and brooding, but I'm also looking for work in colour to force some inspiration ..

Many thanks!

James Ravilious is rightly admired and regularly brought to our attention here on RFF, including a link to a documentary about him after his death.

Colin Baxter Photography for Scotland. However, I would say he captures the beauty of Highland landscapes more than their "desolation".

Tim Rudman has a lot of British landscape photos in his toning and lith-printing literature.
Those are beautiful.

I can't suggest names (though one of those Bill Brandt images, of Willy Lot's cottage at Flatford Mill, is of somewhere I've been and is wonderfully creepy), but if you want desolate British landscapes I'd suggest seeing who has photographed Rannoch Moor and Dungeness. Much of the west coast of Scotland would also fit the bill, as would the Brecklands.

Dunno how helpful that is, hopefully it's good.

If you find the RFF Euromeet 2011 collection on Flickr (I was only able to make the Friday and Saturday and learnt so much from the rest of the group) you will see that some of those attending went on to Dungeness. Although there are only a few pictures, you will get some idea of the feel of the place.

Another nod for Bill Brandt especially his book on literary Britain. Some great desolate shots of the moors
