stopped at the local camera shop on the way home today...played with the sony rx1 for quite a while...nice camera, feels good in the hands, i like the little thumb rest it has...be nice if the fujis had that too!!
i played with the menu system, turned off that pathetic pretend shutter sound, took a few shots using the back lcd...much like i sometimes do with the fujis, i like that method quite a bit...
then i played with a leica m-e that had the cutest 35mm summarit attached. what a nice little lens that is...so smooth to focus, omg!
the m-e itself felt a little fat in the hand...just a touch too thick but nothing that would really intefere with its use or handling.
the body was about $5400...i didn't bother to ask what the lens cost...
the rx1 seemed downright affordable at 3k...
if i were a one camera one lens guy (which is appealing at times) or if the sony were priced at even 2k...i would have bought it in a heartbeat (or a new york minute)...even if i were a better photogrpher maybe...
but as things stand buying either camera would be a poor choice for me.
so i bought a cleaning cloth and a rubber hood for the fuji 14...

You showed commendable restraint, Joe, in confronting the GAS demon head on, spitting in its eye and walking away.

Lol. Wait for all the used one to be available in about 8 months when the rx2 rumors about shipping dates starts comes out.. Christmas discount sales on te remaining inventory. If u still got the gas for it, it may be in and around the 1600 range even. Sony churns out new bodies like no one else's business.. Just looks at their Nex and dslr line.
Any I think u are a good decision.

So, you've beaten the RX1 demon for the moment.

When I bought my M9, I also felt it was a bit thick. And a little slick in the hand. So I put it in a nice leather half case. That makes it a little thicker, really, but the improvement in grip makes it feel smaller and handier.
And while I still have other digital cameras, the M9 is the best of the lot for me. It simply works the way I want my camera to work and produces great results in the process. Can't ask for much more than that.

Thanks for the update. The money you didn't spend today could be used for travel.

I did the same thing a few weeks ago.
In theory the RX-1 has almost everything going for it. In reality its to much of a p&s camera. The controls - build - handling. Its way overpriced and will not hold its value.
The Leica is a real camera. Indeed its a bit fat but the quality it oozes and the way it handles is much more appealing to me.
Yes its overpriced but it least has value.
At the same time I had a look at the Canon 6D hoping to mimic a Olympus OM-1 experience by attaching a manual Zeiss lens to it. But it remained to big and heavy for me. Also it keeps screaming "CAMERA"...
Reducing my camera collection. Sold some transceivers (I am a ham..) saving up for a M with a Cron to give myself for my 50th birthday.
To keep me from ever selling it I want to get it engraved "50 Jahre Rogier 1964"...

Europe sounds good to me also! I would like to go back to Germany, Italy, Turkey and United Kingdom. I never got to see enough of those places. I was there for work and every once in a while I got to act like I was on vacation but not nearly enough! Nice places and really nice people!

Travel? Europe? Then its the RX100 and a bunch of batteries and a few SD cards. Trip of a lifetime? You DO NOT want to be hauling a bunch of gear around with you! Have a GREAT time if you decide to go, Joe. I think a trip is a wonderful idea at this point in your 'career transition phase'. A trip like that can put a whole lot of stuff in perspective. Good luck with the decisions.

I try to take a couple of weeks in the UK and elsewhere every year. I'm heading over at the end of March for three weeks this year.
Camera, three lenses, iPad and camera connection kit. Works a treat, small and light.

I managed to get round trip airfare, San Francisco – London nonstop, for $1100. I don't think that's particularly expensive in this day and age. Last time I went over, the same flight itinerary was going to cost over $1500, so I switched to Dublin and used less expensive local transit to get me where I wanted to be.
