Hanoi viewed through Leica M

Some nice photos here. I can puke as I was in combat there. How nice to see them now, how terrible it was back then. I don't think any aliens would ever land here. They would be disgusted on how we live. We are animals. Turn on the news and see.
I am always amazed that there are a lot of folks here had/have relations with Vietnam. It's also very interesting to hear what people used to be the other side of the war think about it. Same things happended when I started thread about Ha Giang [link: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113447 ]Please keep comments come, I very happy to know and to learn new things.

I have been to Vietnam dozens of times on business trips as my company has an office there. I have never heard anyone there including friends, relatives (by way of my brother's in laws), co workers, employees, contractors, strangers, while drunk or sober ever mentioned even for a brief moment the "American war" or any sort of regret or hatred toward Americans. Is this an American thing keeping bringing back past conflicts over and over again? Earlier in this thread there was a photo of a child holding a plastic gun, something that could have been from any child in any country but the fact that it was Vietnam reminded the poster about the war. Truly bizarre.

Those are such wonderful photos. Thank you so much for sharing.

49 is especially good.

You are completely right. Nowadays nobody looks the American with insulted eyes.

On the other hands, now we really look forward to cooperate with Americans in many sectors. The most recent attempt is the negotiation to join the TPP (Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement)

Even more, with the conflict between Vietnam and China when the Chinese located their movable oil rig HD 981 in Vietnam sea, Vietnamese even asked American for support. I am not going into details about these stuffs, you will find it online just after few searchs.

I hope it's ok if I post a couple here as well. It's a fun place to visit with a camera.

There is so much poverty shown in the images.
Thanks for capturing so well a slice of life in Hanoi.

Wow, I can't believe I've never seen this thread.
Seeing how people live in the other side of the globe is what I appreciate the most about photography.

Keen *and* interested pair of eyes always produce interesting photos that, to me, speaks volumes even within a single image. And this thread is full of good examples of that.

Good job, Trung. Keep this up.

Thanks Will, as said in the 1st post, I am not ambitious to depict a city but only slices of it. The more slices I have the clearer picture of city I bring to you.
What really strikes in this thread is high quality film images.

Good stuff!
Thanks Kostya, now I am more and more a "die-hard" film guy LOL

What I was worried when I started the thread is my bias in depicting the rough sides of the cities. In fact, we have been changing a lot recent years though still is far behind in comparisions to EU, AU and other developed cities in Asia where I had chance to visit.I will try to capture more the developed/developing faces of city and do hope that folks can contribute their photos if any to have a more objective views.

This is Hanoi in 2008, only time I've been there, stayed for two weeks. Very interesting place, would like to visit again. This photo was made with Leica M6 and 35mm lens with Fuji Neopan 1600. Near Hoan Kiem. Two of the most noticeable aspects of Hanoi were that a large proportion of the population are young people, and how everyoone gets around on two wheels in quite a casual manner.
