How to post pictures in threads

To the OP just save the photos in your rff gallery and link them from there. Only way that works for me.

Godfrey, I always like your posts but those two may as well be in martian. I bet most of us on this site would have no idea whatsoever what those posts mean, excepting the IT technicians here of which there may be a few.......

The day we have to learn HTLM code to post a photo will be the day this site dies. Even looking at HTML gives me a pounding headache........

I keep thinking this site needs to be revised to make uploading photos easy but then I see what happened when Photo.net went to 2.0 and I lie down until the feeling passes

If I post photos here regularly it becomes easy from my gallery but if I take a month off it takes me hours to work out how to do it again, it simply is not intuitive.

I can appreciate the frustration, but many of us - myself included - maintain blogs where we regularly have to deal with importing HTML code from some other source in order to post photos.

I think you may have misunderstood Godfrey’s post. You don’t have to learn HTML (whatever that is). You don’t have to learn anything. All you have to do is copy/paste from the ‘Share’ button on your Flickr image.

Hi, nickthetasmaniac ( love that by the way)

You are probably correct in my misunderstanding, I am much more impressed by your very simple one-liner clarifying that all you have to do is copy/paste from the share button on your Flickr image, that makes total sense, even though I left Flickr years ago.
The question now is does that work for the OP, I for one would love to know how he's getting on with this.

Thanks, Nick.

And if you cannot copy & paste from flickr.com, just put your photo on a web server somewhere, type in the url, and put IMG tags on either side of it in square brackets:

I can't find any simpler way to express this. It will work for any .jpg image on any image server. If that's too complicated, well, I give up.

Posting images in threads...

I post images to the Gallery by uploading them directly to RFF, Now I’m trying to post an image into a thread from my Amazon photos/drive account. I can copy the url and post it. It appears, briefly, then disappears. I’m guessing that Amazon photos/drive doesn’t work for this, for some reason. Does anyone know if that’s the case?

If so, any recommendations for an effective hosting service? I haven’t used Flickr or any of the others, so far...

Thanks for the help.

Not sure about Amazon, but Flickr works just fine if you copy the BBCode under the "share" icon. It looks like a little right-facing arrow under your photo. Copy that code, and toss it into a reply.

Ok, for anyone who might find this helpful, here's what I've learned about using Apple iClould Photos or Google Photos as hosting platforms for posting images on sites/forums, etc. I have free accounts at both and wanted to know if either could work for this.

You can't use iCloud Photos... I talked to Apple Support and this function is not supported.

Google Photos also does not support this function, but there is a work-around, which is fairly simple. A third party website provides the function (https://www.labnol.org/embed/google/photos/). Here's their instructions:

Embed Google Photos

Open any picture on the photos.google.com, click the Share button and then click Get Link to create a shareable link of that image. Paste that Google Photos link in the box below to generate the HTML embed code with one-click."

I've tried it and worked to post an image on an RFF thread. Of course, if you have a flickr account you don't need this.

Here's my how-to for linking images from Google Photos...

1) go to your image in Google photos
2) click the share icon > create link > create link > copy
3) go to this website and follow the instructions: https://www.labnol.org/embed/google/photos/
4) Highlight and copy the "direct image link"
5) navigate to the RF thread where you want to post the image.
6) click on the little picture item and paste the link in.
7) Let me know if I goofed in these directions. :)

I'm not sure if this has been addressed before, and apologize if it has, but I don't (and won't) post my photos on any online sharing sites. I would like to post to RFF from the images I store on my computer, but cannot seem to make this work. Chris Crawford posted instructions a while ago for doing this, but they didn't work for me. I'm using Windows 10, if that matters. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I just tried the upload method and it worked okay but is buggy.

Picture icon > Upload tab > Choose file > Send it to server > OK

Sometimes I get a URL error message after Send it to server, but bypassing the error message with another OK works. Sometimes I have to repeat the process twice. It's definitely buggy.

John

Edit: One thing I notice; although it allows you to size the image, exceding the smallish default size degrades the image significantly. So it appears to be uploading a smallish version of the original. Certainly better than the thumbnail in the old software. Some documentation of this new process would be nice.

I have some 160 pictures as attachments- the limit per account is ~30MBytes or so. It is limited.

It is fun to look at some of the old ones.

Well, I forgot that I had to wrap the link within an

pair
- you know of course that to really forget things you need a computer.

OK, one step further: an external uploaded picture from computer, is small, stays small. So still need a Gallery loop.

Please check the possibility to post . This is all I get.

1) Upload from from file. Low res throughout. Not worth bothering. Nice compo this way, sure.

2) upload from Forum.
Upload from URL.

Yippy! a size difference by removing the MED_
But is is still scaled up thumbnail.

Not worth posting.
I'm afraid there is a fire

I'm just trying to drag and drop from my Pictures folder in an iMac. I've resized the photos in Lightroom from 1000 px on the long side all the way up to 2200 px. Makes no difference. I've tried large and full size in the thread and the images are still too small when posted. Just wondering....

Can someone please advise me how to upload images, other than pasting BB codes from a hosting site such as Flickr.
For instance, do I need to set up an album (my album) in the gallery and then import to ‘my album’ and then copy the link to a thread where I wish to contribute?
I’ve been searching the forum for guidance, honest, but I can’t find the ‘how to’ instructions I’m after. If it’s here in this thread then perhaps I’ve overlooked it. I do apologise if that’s the case.

Okay, so I just tried to do it right here in this thread.

Me in the 1967 Lancia Fulvia Coupe - April 2021

1- click the Image icon in the message editor
2- pilot to a JPEG on my hard disk and select a photo
3- upload to the RFF server
4- add annotation and click ok

It installed the image right here in stream.

Trying to do it here directly, using just an image on my hard disk (not on Flickr.com).

Click image for larger version Name:	gdg_in_fulvia.jpg Views:	0 Size:	469.8 KB ID:	4756044

Click Upload Attachments
Select the image file (JPEG)
Upload it
Pick a size to present
Add more text ... and then hit Post Reply.

That's two different paths to the same result. :D

Thank you Godfrey. I tried almost, if not exactly, as you have said (but not sure if I used upload or attach, as in your examples above). The result I achieved was a really small postage stamp image. I’ll have to investigate the sizing option. What width and height did you use above. I understand there’s a 400k limit, is that right?

Just a test of how to upload a photo. I don't use Flickr or any other site on-line so this might be nice as a way to share occasionally.

Hi everyone, this is very helpful....but when I want to post a photo do I start a "New Topic" within the "Street Photography" group or thread ? Thank, Jim Scolman.
