Sneaky (cat!)

Sneaky was growing concerned about the near-famine conditions in our home. We were down to just 5 cans of cat food, so I went shopping last night and bought 40 cans (about a two day supply, in Sneaky's opinion!).

As soon as I put one of the bags on the counter, he jumped up there and stared at me with his "SLAVE! Feed me, NOW!" look. He had eaten steak for dinner an hour earlier; I told him he needed to wait a while for more food.

You told him WHAT??!! Fear for your life!

He always looks really fat in the winter; its mostly fluff. Still, he is very well fed. :)

And well-groomed! His coat is beautiful, especially for a long-hair. How is Sneaky with brushing? Our kitty, also long-haired, tends to develop matted spots. She'll tolerate brushing for a while, but suddenly decides she's had enough. Then, all hell breaks loose!

Sneaky is the same. I broke up a mat that I discovered on his belly a few minutes ago and he took a couple of claw-swipes at me and tried to bite me. He'll tolerate a little brushing at a time, but if I catch a matted spot, he shows his 'inner rattlesnake.'

When I first got a long-haired cat (a 10-year old, rescued and from the animal shelter), it would shed lots of long black hair and, worse, would gag on it. What I at first thought was poop on the carpet turned out to be these huge hair-sausages. The fur would mat as well.

For about a year, I would take the cat in for a “lion trim” to reduce the amount of long fur. It looks both cool and silly. What made me stop doing that, besides the cost, was that they’d have to sedate the cat - I didn’t think that was good for the long term. Anyway, the solution was to get him a special diet (Iam’s) to prevent fur balls. That worked.

We use a brand called Royal Canin, recommended by our vet. It's been a big help with hairballs. We also buy oat grass at our food co-op. A 2"x2" square costs about $2.00, and stays alive for about a month in a shallow dish of water. Kitty munches at her leisure, and it provides lots of fiber to help her pass any hair she's ingested. Some good micro-nutrients, too. Sneaky isn't the only pampered cat on this forum!

yeah, his face looks like he says "you, slave, know your duty. now finally act!"

again, thanks for sharing. this is the one thread that makes me come back to RFF regularly.
cheers,

Sneaky is such a beautiful cat. The photos of him are wonderful.

But I don’t think Sneaky is really demanding - it’s all just conditioned reflex: he knows that if he waits long enough and doesn’t eat anything else, steak will arrive.

Sneaky spends a lot of time looking out the kitchen window. He has to be vigilant; he has many enemies in the neighborhood who will take advantage of any opportunity to come into HIS territory and spray things!

It is cold outside, so it is nice to have a heated observation post.

Well, who has the "conditioned reflex"? I think Sneaky has Chris conditioned to give him steak, pronto, whenever he gives him the "Hungry Sneaky" look. I know that look; my cat uses it as well, and resistance on my part is futile.

Nice weather today for Sneaky to sit on the front porch and watch over his territory. He often sits there for hours, watching for other cats, opossums, or dogs who might try to trespass on his domain.

Sneaky is a beautiful pussycat.

My own Leo is a cat-type person too. I have tremendous admiration & repect for his character & intelligence. Since the two of us live alone, Leo and I can get pretty bored at times. Then it's playtime !!! The rules of our little game are simple: I try to tie his tail in a knot, and he tries to completely eviscerate my arm. What fun! Leo, however, knows that when I have to step out for a minute to go to the hospital, our game is finished for the day.

Whoa! Sneaky is usually sweet to me. He'll bite if I ignore him too long when he is demanding food, and when I am brushing him too long, but he never scratches me or bites when playing.

Several cats I’ve had had an instinctual reaction when, the cat being on its back, you place your arm and hand downwards - from head towards tail, and “scrub” their tummy. They’d wrap their front paws around your arm and claw upwards with their hind feet, all the while biting into your arm as well. They can’t help it. The only way out is to keep your arm and hand still and speak soothingly. Afterwards, they seem a bit embarrassed. It’s kind of a cute thing when your cat is bored. However, bites and scratches aren’t anything like photo above!
