50mm 1.1 Lenses: CV and 7Artisans with Leica M10

The RFF thread on the new CV 50mm 1.0 let me take out my 7Artisans 50mm 1.1 and the CV 50mm 1.1. I have not used either lens for a while, and I was surprised by the vignetting. It may have been the lens hoods used, but the 7Artisans came to me with this lens hood. The vignetting was much less with the CV (and another lens hood). Overall, I like the images from the CV more than the images from the 7Artisans lens. I cropped the edges of most of the images by the 7Artisans lens.

I will use the CV without a hood next. It is a very good lens, I think. Its large max aperture allows me to use this lens on overcast days @ ISO 200 and having the flexibility of using apertures 1.1~11 usually.
 
I can post some comparison shots between the 50/1.1 Nokton and 7Art 50/1.1.

On the 7Art: I used a 55 to 58 step up ring for the hood originally Then- I made a 55mm clamp-on vented hood, same as I use on the Canon 50/1.2. I bought a cheap Olympus rubber 55mm clamp on, took the rubber out and epoxied a 58mm vented hood to it.

50/1.1 Nokton Vignetting, set to infinity.



The Asymmetry is due to the shape of the aperture when stopping down.

The 50/1.1 7Art.



A lot of drop-off at the edges. That, and an incorrect hood- can be a real problem.
 
Brian: thanks a lot! We know now more about the vignetting!

I will for a start remove the lens hood and I will try using step-up ring(s).
 
It looks as if the 7Art has some serious vignetting at any aperture setting. The profile for the CV is much better looking. I wonder how the new CV 50/1 will perform.
 
The Nokton 50mm f/1.1 is a very sharp lens, even at f/1.1, not only in the center, but througout the whole field. The field of sharpness is very flat and is even across the whole field of view, extreme corners excluded. Add to that its freedom of distortion and it is clear that it is a very good lens. Sometimes, but not always, the bokeh is very nice too. People who want a truly impressive bokeh lens will use the Noctilux 50mm f/1.

At closest focus- much better.



The rear element is close to the image plane, "not optimal" for Digital. On the M9 and M Monochrom, not too bad until infinity. Would be better on film.

Mid-range, not bad.

Thanks, Erik. I see fine details in the images from the Nokton. It is a fine lens indeed. The Leica Noctilux is outside my reach. I once used a Noctilux 50/1 from a RFF member who mailed me his lens in one of my 50mm tests in the past. I also had on loan a Nikkor 50/1.1 and Canon 50/0.95. That was cool.

The profile looks slightly/much better at the closest focus. Sellers of lenses don't advertise such issues.
 
This is with the Noctilux 50mm f1 of István Penzes, who is also the model in this picture. Not very sharp, but a very nice bokeh.

These are bloody lovely shots, Mapgraphs. Also, what I'm really taking from these is that the 7Artisan lens is far nicer than it has any right to be for that price. Yeah, the Voigtlander might be better on a technical level, but the bang-for-your-buck on that is ridiculous. Yet again though, I find myself wishing that it was available in LTM. Dammit.
