Hello everyone,

My first time back here for a while. Has anyone else here got the Contax G Planar 45mm F2 to Leica M conversion by Funleader / Mr Ding? I'd really like to hear your impressions of the lens. I will share mine briefly below. I am impressed with it, but I do have two gripes with the lens. I wonder if the issues are with my copy or universal?

Briefly, for anyone who doesn't know, Funleader are offering both a complete, calibrated and rangefinder couple lens in their own brass helicoid, as well as offering an empty helicoid for those that wish to supply their own Contax G lens and do the (apparently non-destructive, reversible) conversion at home. I went for the complete lens in black paint.

This lens is really impressive out of the box. A very professional finish, and clearly from the weight it's a solid piece of brass. My black paint copy has a somewhat matte finish, with red and white markings. It looks great on my black Zeiss Ikon. It comes with a metal slip-on lens cap, which I think is a nice touch.

Issue 1. This lens focuses from closer than 0.7m (maybe 0.67m?) to (actually a little past) infinity. This is personal preference, but I wish the lens stopped hard at 0.7m and at infinity. At close focus, the focus ring continues to turn after the RF patch has stopped at 0.7m on my Ikon. This isn't entirely unfamiliar. The same happens when I mount a 0.7m lens on my M3, of course. But for me, this is something I like to avoid.

At infinity the RF patch keeps moving with the focus ring a fraction past infinity. An RF lens focussing past infinity is a new one to me. None of my other lenses do it... That's not to say my experience of M mount lenses is that extensive, btw. I have a couple of Voigtlanders, a Minolta M-Rokkor, a vintage Summicron and an Avenon.

Having said all that, focus does seem to be perfectly accurate.

Issue 2. There is a small amount of play in the focus ring. I would say about 0.5mm of play before the helicoid starts turning. I know 0.5mm doesn't sound like a lot but it's enough for the ring to feel wobbly. Once the helicoid is turning, it is very smooth. I find the play a bit distracting. Maybe I'll get used to it. I don't have any other lenses that have play in the focus ring like this. I raised this with Funleader and they told me they asked Mr Ding (the man who makes the lenses) about it and he said it's normal and he just can't make them more accurate unfortunately. I naively hoped there might be a way to tighten it up.

Do other owners of this lens have the same play in their focus ring?

Probably my expectations were too high. But I can't help but wish Funleader had better described what to expect from this lens on their website. I don't want to to sound overly negative about this lens though. It's as sharp and contrasty as you'd hope from the famous 45mm Planar. I'd love to hear what other owners think of this conversion.

I bought one fully assembled as well. My infinity stop is perfect and the lens does not focus past infinity at all. Mine does focus closer than 0.7m as well, which I don’t mind because I shoot it on a Sony digital often and the closer focus is nice. I do not notice any play in the focus ring as compared to other lenses I have. You might want to talk to Funleader about your copy because it might need to be tuned up.

My copy has a little bump in the focus ring when you get near close focus, but it’s not annoying. Otherwise, I really like the lens. It’s very nice looking. I compared its performance against an original G 45/2 and it’s exactly the same as far as I can tell. The Funleader version is way way nicer to use than the G housing.

(Slight update: focus with this lens is perfect with a VM-E adapter to Sony and also with my M4. My M4-P focuses a little past infinity with all my lenses. Maybe it needs to be calibrated? It sounds like your lens might be off and not your rangefinder.)

Im currently waiting for the helicoid to be available to I can purchase that. Glad to see it’s working out for you guys. I can’t wait to get mine going

I bought a converted Zeiss G 45/2 in M mount from another person, here at RFF. I also have another 45/2 in G mount in case I want to use the lens with a G camera. My lens does not focus all the way to infinity, it seems. With photos that require a sharp infinity I don't use the lens wide open anyways. A smaller aperture takes care of the focusing.

Hi, I must say that this is an incredible work of engineering to take the original glass and convert it to an M mount like this. Others have tried but do not look anywhere as good as this. I once had the 90mm G converted to m mount but the whole lens turned as you focused including the front element and filter thread. The glass looks brand new considering it must be 10 years+ old. My lens does have the slightest bit of free focus play before engaging the lens group. I do not know if this can be improved upon but given how much better this conversion is compared to other attempts or awkward converters it is becoming less of an issue being so minimal.

Like I've said in a previous post, I personally believe the glasses are indeed brand new, instead of having been sealed away in a secret warehouse for decades. Must had been pretty big a warehouse should it does exist since, they had little trouble procuring a batch of Contax G Planar 35/2 glasses (for which they've already got the helicoid) from it lately - something I had been expecting anyway. I would not be surprised if they were able to go further and dig up some G 28/2.8 glasses.

Anyway, it's just my speculation. Quality wise I think they're really fine. It's just the story that's getting wilder with each release.

Thanks for sharing. I think I will contact them again. Your copy is definitely better than mine!
