I must confess that I, too, have become enamored of this French camera. At the open of business French time this morning I placed my order, order #286. I do not know if the order corresponds to anything. I will be checking my porch every day now for that camera.

Will Pixii be eating Leica's lunch? Leica must have noticed and are probably tracking sales numbers. This will be interesting.

They have already. 28, 35, 40 and 50. The camera frame lines correspond to what APS-C will see. Check out the website: pixii.fr

I think we have some confusion here. You slap that 28mm on the Pixii and the RF shows you what the actual FOV is on APS-C. So while you are looking at 28mm framelines your FOV is for 42mm. Is this what you want to have happen? If so, it is happening.

I believe this is covered on page 7 of the manual.

Boojum, I want framelines for 21mm and 24/25mm lenses, that give you roughly the same angle of view as 28mm and 35mm lenses on full frame.

No, some people want 28mm and 35mm FOV... currently now it is a 42mm + FOV world for Pixii. Unfortunately, I think they could pull off a 24mm OVF (Leica did it for the M8 I believe), but 21mm has not been achieved by anyone yet.

This camera is what the M series should have been, could have been but is not because the drudges in Leitz are focused on the M3, but electronic.

To regard the depth and breadth of German technical ability and to see what they trot out now and again as "the new improved model" makes me stress my Norman English forbears and deny the German ones. ;o)

Really? Why? They have the SL and S series that shows what they can do with a focus on current camera design. The Q also.

Leica deserves better and so, too, do we. Pixii seems to be on the road to deliver it. They found the niche. Hello, Kaufmann, are you listening? Your ship may have sailed without you.

I am not sure why you think Leica fans are not happy. I am sure Pixii is no threat to Leica. No ship is truly sailing right now...

Honestly, reading through this thread over the last few months, and then watching that video that got posted the other night... the Pixii is very tempting. There's a lot of great tech and ideas in this thing. The last hurdle that puts me off at this point is the APS-C sensor; while I don't mind using APS-C on Fuji's X bodies, they have lenses designed for that sensor and that field of view. Having all my 50mm rangefinder lenses suddenly only have a "75mm equivalent" field of view is annoying enough on the X-Pro 2, but at least they're not my main lenses for that body.

Then there's the issue of having to source external viewfinders that are roughly equivalent to the FOV of my lenses mounted on an APS-C camera (like needing to find a ~23mm external viewfinder to use the 15mm Voigtlander Super-Wide Heliar), and it just becomes even more irritating.

I get why they used APS-C, and I know full-frame from an underdog startup would be asking a lot. But it's still a major hurdle for me - especially when the price of a Pixii is roughly the same as a used M240.

I think mirrorless became the alternative to SLRs over rangefinders. What I mean, is that once mirrorless cameras appeared, it even made less see to make a new rangefinder camera unless you are Leica. Leica has the legacy! Be thankful we have the Pixii. It truly is a minor miracle that they pulled it off. A labor of love for sure.

If the Pixii was full frame and cost $3500-4000, there would be a lot of excitement to buy one.

The disconnect between lens options and the APS-C sensor is the biggest drawback for me.

All the cameras that have video also have live view -- that's where the video signal comes from -- and to see the live view they need some kind of LCD or EVF, which means they need an LCD/EVF driver chip, and if they're going to add that they might as well add... well, follow that road long enough and you end up with a Nikon Z9. Which is cool, but it's the exact opposite of what I personally want in a camera. The Pixii skips all that stuff in the interest of being straightforward and sparse.

No, video is possible without the EVF. I just checked. The movie being made can be watched on Live View, however.

This Pixiii is the M8 of the French Pixii company. It does not have all the bells and whistles, yet. First, get it to run. Second, beta it and see where it breaks. Third pass it around to some industry pros to evaluate. Fourth, gather the good comments and market the hell out of it and pray orders come in. I think Pixii is on step Four. Remember that this truly is a computer with a lens stuck on. Modifying, upgrading or rewriting the software can make this thing do a lot of things it does not now do.

This current version is better than the first version. Hopefully the code is 1) maintainable and 2) efficient in that it can do a lot with small resources which is to say it is not a battery hog. Turn off WiFi and it is not.

Is this a dandified smartphone with interchangeable lenses? Looks and sounds like one but camera only. If it is what a brilliant way to approach a new camera.

So these three mecs are sitting around a cafe one night, two CE's and an EE and kicking around smartphones and one says, "Hey, let's build a smartphone with interchangeable lenses!" "Go on," the other two say. "No, listen, make a camera with a smartphone guts and good lenses. Marcel, what are some good lenses?" Marcel says, "Leica is supposed to be good." Voilia! Née Pixii.
