Another Reason to Dislike "Cinema" 35mm Film

We can talk this up or down or blame anyone, but the result is shocking for the photographer and the processing company getting the sh.t out of the machines. I am sorry. 😢

This would be a perfectly valid reason for labs not to accept any bulk, non factory loaded C41 film. Why take the chance on your say so?

Initially I misread that you mixed up some rolls, dang, sorry for that. It really sucks to have damage due to factors like this. For me, considering to shoot a large amount of film traveling... Good to send in differnt batches.

I'm not a fan of the cine films, allegedly just have a Cinestill Roll frozen that I got just to try and never get around to shoot. If still film exists it is for a reason. Then also I am mainly doing 120 which doesn't have the respooling market due to the need for backing paper.
Cine film clearly works very well when processed accordingly, as many big box studios show in theater. But at home it is another thing.

There are some Kodak particularities and there was a long thread in Photrio about bulk load prices, that Kodak doesn't have an efficient set up for that finishing.

It’s simple enough for the lab to pull the leader out and see if it has remjet backing. If so then reject it.

I blame the idiot that sent the film to the lab and equally blame the lab for not checking any bulk film they receive. Simple to do.

I don’t blame Kodak. Kodak make a cine product that anyone can buy. They have no more control over how you use it than Chevy has as to how you use their cars or Jack Daniel has over how you use their whiskey. You’re an adult and expected to know enough to use the produce responsibly and the way intended. You’re no longer a child, hopefully.

What the lab should do is check every roll of bulk loaded film and have a policy that states if you send in a roll that gets through our check and it messes up the chemistry, machine and others work you are financially responsible. You pay!

100% i am with you, it is too costly not to check.

An unmarked cassette is an obvious red flag, I'm sure the lab has learned its lesson...

But at that point, I'd much rather have 100ft of Provia and some E6 chems...

You could get Ektachrome 100D in 400ft rolls from Kodak, not quite Provia at all but E6 bulk loading is still alive!
