For the record, a request was never received for the account to be closed. The account shows activity here within the last hour, hopefully @Yokosuka Mike will reconsider and become active again.

Back to the original interesting question I have some difficulties to answer, which is why it took me a few days to answer.
There was a time in which I was very interested in the gallery, both visiting and posting.
I also tried months ago to revive the old thread "Gallery picks for the Week" but after a few months I decided it was not worthwhile because not much partecipation.
For me the Gallery (Capital G on purpose!) should be a place where to post pictures which can generate comments, open a friendly dialogue. I do not think of a criticism which we all know could give further problems but a dialog, a conversation about the photo, where, when, how. Is there anything special and not visible at first glance in that picture? But it seems me lately this is more done through dedicated threads which is fine, of course. An example are the photos by Chris Crafwford about his area of Fort Wayne, where the photos of buildings become much more than a simple "nice photo" because of the added description and information. Well done Chris 🙂
Having said this I admit it is many moths I do not post in the Gallery. One reason is that I have lost much interest in photography, generally speaking it has become too fast, too simple, too immediate. Both in making and in looking at. And not only online, I noticed the same in the local Photo Association I was part of. And we are flooded with photographs...
Of course please do not misunderstand me: this is my "problem" nothing to do with RFF which I still daily visit, even if I do not post photos or rarely take part in the various thread.
It seems to me that despite a few days of reflection I still find it difficult to express my thoughts about the gallery, sorry!

I think that it is not easy to arrive at the "best" expressions to use when we have such a situation. Any discussions are better than having silence. I believe in moving forward. Things will get better and people here hopefully will be forgiving.

By the way I have a small problem navigating the Gallery: if I see let's say in the "Hall of Fame" or "Photos generating discussion" section and desire to read previous comment how can I do this? If I click the bottom right corner (three lines) it opens a window where I can post a comment or copy the Image URL but I am not able to open the page with the comments and other infos about that image.
Am I doing somethoing wrong? Is it possible togo directly from one photo to that page?

@robert blu it is not intuitive, but after clicking on the hamburger icon (3-lines), click on the mini-image in pop-up window which will then bring you to the full image w/comments page.
Example:

Click on the top right corner of horizontal images where there is a two-arrow sign.. Then scroll below the shown images. If there are past comments they can then be seen when clicking on “show more”.

Navigation within the Gallery is more complicated than it needs to be. For the Random Selections offered at the top of the RFF Forum page, one click isolated the photo, another click opens a new tab with the photo, a third click goes to the details page where you can enlarge the photo see whatever details are available and comments. The Comments section requires additional clicks to drill down to see all comments.
Contrast that to the Gallery where one can click on the photographer, the menu icon (lower right) or photo details icon (upper right). The photographer name points to a "stats" page - needing additional clicks to get to the content, including a My Portfolio (which goes to an empty page?) and My Photos which is a duplicate to the link for the Photos link which provides the same three options for navigation shown in the gallery.
All I want to do is click on the photo, enlarge it, get the photographer's name and whatever details are offered.

There's absolutely zero mention of any existing comments on there.
So, okay. We open it up (which is a bit unintuitive in itself - I closed the "hamburger menu" and then click the diagonal arrows; there should really be a link within this "hamburger pop-up" for it. And yes, I know you can click on the little thumbnail in this pop-up, but again... not intuitive), and we see just one comment by default:
Considering the gallery is attached to a forum, and discussion is an important part of a forum, this setup seems a bit convoluted to me.

Thanks Raid, I noticed the double arrow but it only enlarged the photo without showing the comment page! Perhaps my mistake, probably not perhaps! Now I know how to do!

You need to scroll down to the next page after the enlarged image. It is below it. See post #62. It shows the enlarged image first and below it the extra information on the right side.

I missed Robert Blu’s generous comment to my recent photo, thinking another member had made the first comment. On the other hand the “show more” compresses the discussion of each photo, leaving more photos in the first page of comments. Maybe “More \/“ done better than this hack would be more noticeable.

One of the positive outcomes, already, from this thread is people looking at the gallery and starting to make comments again. Bravo!!

On the other hand, we lost a long-time, actively contributing member because of unsolicited criticism, including comments from a new member with not even a dozen total posts on the forum. Personally, I hardly interacted with the Gallery, so I consider Mike leaving a much bigger loss.
