In 1972 I can remember needing to find a car I could take to school. My '57 Chevy 150 had a very weak trans so it wasn't a candidate. I too was looking at '67 Bugs and had found one at Beverly Hills VW that looked like a possible buy. I ran into an old girl friend and told her I was looking and she asked 'Whatever happened to your Porsche or BMW dream?'.
That Saturday I went down to the local newspaper stand (remember those?) and bought a Sunday LA Times, which came out on Saturday morning, go figure. I found a '68 BMW 1600 with only 25k miles on it for $1600, twice the ask of the VW. After test driving it I bought it and kept it for 9 years and sold it, with 138k miles on it, for $1500.
