A big aspiration of mine during my younger years was to be the proud owner of a VW Beetle. As a teenager, I used to go to the dealer to look at the new Beetles and to sit in the showroom models so much that a salesman gave me a paperback book, called "The Small Wonder" by Walter Henry Nelson, published in 1967. (I still have it.) The book was about the history of the Beetle, and I used it as the basis for a report in my high school German class.
When I see a picture like this, it makes my heart ache. I never did own a Beetle.
Judging from the turn-signal lights, this one is a 1955 - 57 model.
Thanks for posting it.

In 1972 I can remember needing to find a car I could take to school. My '57 Chevy 150 had a very weak trans so it wasn't a candidate. I too was looking at '67 Bugs and had found one at Beverly Hills VW that looked like a possible buy. I ran into an old girl friend and told her I was looking and she asked 'Whatever happened to your Porsche or BMW dream?'.
That Saturday I went down to the local newspaper stand (remember those?) and bought a Sunday LA Times, which came out on Saturday morning, go figure. I found a '68 BMW 1600 with only 25k miles on it for $1600, twice the ask of the VW. After test driving it I bought it and kept it for 9 years and sold it, with 138k miles on it, for $1500.

A one-off, a hand built all aluminum Bugatti built as a special request for Mullin of the Mullin Museum. This magnificent museum has been closed down now and the collection broken up to satisfy the heirs.
