Is that the Edmund O'Brien, Liberty ship of fame, moored in San Francisco? They used to offer weekend classes aboard in the use of the nautical sextant for navigation qualification, and for nostalgia. It was sailed to Europe for a D Day celebration, too, IIRC. An on-air interview while docked in England was a problem as the crew was ashore in a pub and not too mic able. It was on KQED and pretty funny. San Francisco, a special place.
 
Here's a couple I shot in a less glamorous venue, down the hill from my home. One, the Ro-Ro was shot on the way home from a great Chinese meal. Note the relative size of the car carrier to the hotel/spa it is passing. Yes, these car carriers are huge. They are also usually in motion. Time is money and you can't sell a car that is on the ship. They'll spend 24-36 hours offloading cars and then away again to the next port of call.

The second is the Lindblad/Nat Geo Sea Bird docked here for a few days and now away. Yes, the tide was out, the ship was not sinking or sunk.

Hi boojum, It's the ship you're thinking of, but the correct name is Jeremiah O'Brien
 
This is an old one. I may have posted it in the past. This is the Arctic Ram heading out for a night of fishing for Whiting. They will be in by morning to offload the catch. The catch will be cleaned, filleted and frozen and is usually shipped to South Africa.

We do get "real" ships here. Today Holland America had the Konigsdam in port. This was a stopover from San Francisco and she is now on the way to Victoria, BC. I am not sure what the tourists find to look at and do in this town but the ships stop here through the summer. It is a convenient and sheltered port and I suppose a good stopover after a cruise up from San Francisco. Anyway, the Konigsdam.
