Lens Hoods 3D printed for Nikon Rangefinder 5cm, 8.5cm & 10.5cm lenses

Because some lens hoods are not only hard to find but also have outrageous prices, I sat down in front of the screen and drew a few.

Attention: the thread is a metric fine thread, either 0,5mm or 0,75mm

When 3D printing, you have to make certain compromises.
The lens hoods are very easily deformed, so don't press too hard from the side when screwing them in, but rather hold them evenly with your whole hand.
The part with the thread must be set / printed to the lowest layer-hight as possible. Best is 0,1mm or lower.
And of course, they have to be painted matt black on the inside.

Every part was test-printed with PLA and PETG and it fit.
Due to different printers and filaments, there MAY be problems with the fit of the thread. Enlarge or reduce the size accordingly in the slicer.
As far as I have the original hoods, the measurements were taken from them.

Nice work, thanks! I just started a print of the 8.5cm f2 hood.

I have an original hood for the 3.5cm f1.8 if measurements from that to create a model would be helpful.

Unfortunately, I haven't yet bought the 3.5 cm 1.8. I'm still looking for one with clean lenses.
Until then, I'll live with the Voigtländer 35mm f 2.5, which isn't a bad lens.
But it will be a pleasure for me to design a lens hood for 3D printing.

I need:
The inner diameter of the large opening at the front.
The length without the thread.
And the length of the thread in the lens.
The thread is 3mm long on some lenses and 2.5mm long on others. I want to use the full length.

According to R. Rotoloni's book, the thread should have a diameter of 43mm. From this I conclude that the pitch is also 0.5mm, like with the 5cm lens. Maybe you have the lens hood for the 5cm f1.4 and can try it. The thread should be the same.

If you live in the inch world, you can also give me the dimensions in decimal inches.

I assume that you would be willing to make a test print and check that it fits. I can only check the thread to see if it is M43 x 0.5. But not whether the length of the thread fits and whether it would vignetting on the live lens. I would of course send you the *.stl file for this before I put it in my model database.
Because it has to fit before I release it into the world.

The 3.5cm f/1.8 has two threads: an internal 43mm thread for filters, and an external 48mm thread for the hood. Actually, the hood that came with your Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5 S-mount can be used for modeling the base, as it is also a perfect fit for the 48mm thread of the 3.5cm (see below). The Voigtlander 21, 25, 28, and 35 S-mount lenses share the same 43/48 threads with the 3.5cm f/1.8, I guess Cosina was inspired by it.

If you make a prototype I'm happy to print and test it! (I don't have the original hood, otherwise I would share the dimensions or try to model it myself)IMG_7215.jpg

Uh - really - my Voigtländers have two threads . . .
anyway.
The 48mm thread on the Voigtländer is a M48 x 0,5mm, same as for the hood for the 8,5cm 2.5 lens.
Just tried it, screws in nicely.
Now we have the tread.

But I also need to know how long the hood for the 3,5 cm should be and which diameter it should have.
Basically I just need to shorten and widen the hood for the 8,5 cm.
But how much???
My brain and my software is waiting for input input input . . .

ah - just read the last sentence - ya dont have the original.

The prices demanded are - obscene.

I need to get a new battery for my calipers. I'll take measurements this evening and send them to you. I happen to have a Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 as well, and just confirmed that the hood for the Nikon 3.5 f1.8 does indeed fit very nicely into the outer threads on the Voigtlander (never tried that before!).

Agreed. Luckily I got one in in pristine condition along with the lens and a Nikon SP from someone asking a price that would have been reasonable for the SP body alone.

Agreed. Luckily I got one in in pristine condition along with the lens and a Nikon SP from someone asking a price that would have been reasonable for the SP body alone.

THE reason why I prefer mechanical cameras and mechanical calipers is - they never run out of batteries ;-)
OK, I confess, I'll have digital cameras and digital calipers too.
anyway.
I've already sent a prototype file to keytarjunkie who already printed it and the thread fits. I tested the thread before on my little Voigtländer, but I had to guess the lenght and the outer diameter.
According to his PM it also does not vignetting.
But I'd like to make the dimensions as close to the original as possible.
I also look forward to make a version with vents so that the viewfinder is not blocked to much.

I'm looking forward for your measurements 😎

Do you own a printer and are you willing to be a weak-willed testprinter 😈

Do you measure the inner diameter of the thread on the lens? ?
If so, then a inner diameter of 58mm will be a M60.

I dont have ANY lens or filter or hood with a M60 thread. Only 58mm filters.
So YOU have to make testprints and testfittings untill it woks as we want it.

Note that the the threads on the original hood are a spring mechanism that you squeeze to fit into the threads on the lens, and are a separate piece from the rest of the lens. That's what accounts for the discrepancy between the inner diameter of the small end of the hood (~52mm) vs the 48mm thread diameter.

With the kind disclosure of the dimensions by "armadsen" and patient help with test prints and design suggestions from "keytarjunkie," I'm now releasing the lens hood for the W-Nikkor 1:1.8 f=3.5 cm wide-angle lens.😎

In the end, nine (9) different designs remained. Now I just need to buy the right lens.
