Nikon Historical Society shutting down -- not so fast!

I was sad to see the letter from Robert Rotoloni in the issue of the NHS Journal I received today announcing that he is shutting down both the society and the journal.

I’m a new member and Nikon fan, having only gotten my first Nikon, an S3 2000, in 2022. I’ve been on the board of directors of a club in another hobby where we too did/do a print newsletter, and know how much work it is, and ours were much smaller and less polished! The newsletters I’ve received have been wonderful, informative, and enjoyable to read through.

While I’m sad to hear of Mr. Rotoloni’s decision to end things, I understand it. If I didn’t have two young kids, including one with special needs, I’d see if I could help keep it going.

Robert, if you read this, I’m probably one of the people you “owe” money to for unfulfilled issues. You most certainly don’t need to refund any of my dues. Consider it a (tiny) donation to defray the personal money you’ve put in to keep things going.

Well, according to the letter, it’s not just a matter of time and effort. He said that each issue costs him $400 more than the dues from members cover. So, not something that would be straightforward for someone to take over and maintain in its current form anyway.

That's a real pity to hear this news, although it's been a long time coming. I haven't received my copy of the newsletter yet but it will be sad when I do.

That would be great. I was sad when the Zeiss Historical Society shut down, and eventually migrated to Facebook. I have seen reports that the Facebook group is insular, and essentially hostile to outsiders. I hope that Stephen can make this work as he has done with Jason Schneider and other stalwarts of the camera press.

I actually own a personally signed copy of Bob Rotoloni's last Rangefinder Book with which he enclosed a lovely long letter to me as I'd asked him one or two questions about my newly acquired Nikon SP Rangefinder Camera and I'd added some of the lenses including an amazing bargain purchase of the Nikon 35/1.8 Lens at £400.00 and its everything its claimed to be proberly the sharpest Lens Nikon has ever manufactured, I used to belong to his Nikon Historical Society and would have loved to go on one of the annual visits to France, the last time we spoke he told me he had recently moved but that was some years ago, I can quite believe it must be a great strain on his personal finances to produce the quarterly Nikon Rangefinder magazine if the membership fees doesn't cover the production costs and its proberly for the best if someone else takes it over completely, it would be a great shame if things ceased altogether because Bob to my knowledge has spent a lifetime writing and researching everything to do with The Nikon Rangefinder Cameras, I have 3 of his books and many copies of the quarterly magazine plus copies of the now Defunct Nikon Club of America that used to be posted to me on a regular basis by a Dentist friend who lived and worked in New York
