Found one here in Japan and got it for ~$3k. There were three other black S2 bodies around that price in the same shop so it seems like prices right now are reasonable considering I was purchasing from a big name shop. Mission accomplished 🙂

I have a very nice black paint S2 and also several chrome S2's. The S2 is the finest user Nikon rf in my opinion. My favorite lens on this camera is not a Nikon lens, but the Zeiss 50mm f1.5, a prewar uncoated Sonnar. The Sonnar however beats them all, also in weight.
The most beautiful black Nikon S2 imo is the version with the 'all black' shutter speed setting dial.
The black S2 is in certain terms more uncommon than black Leica M3.
True the Leica commands more prestige and price, but the total number of units produced will always remain in favor of Nikon.
The early black S2 was made in hundreds some 70 years ago…total production estimated at 550
That’s the one Erik mentions.
The S2 is a workhorse, built to last indefinitely. Stuff like that are not made anymore. No one tries to make something that lasts forever.
Sharing a family picture (below). I forgot to mention I also snagged (from ebay japan) a black dial S2.
The rangefinder patch on the chrome S2 is dim unfortunately, but everything else works fine. I agreed to a partial refund since returning it would be inconvenient, and I figured I can use it as a donor body for parts if and when the black S2 will need some.
I’ll likely stick an external VF on it in the meantime and use it for wide angle lenses.
