Photography gear that is giving you gas at this very moment

I'm wrestling with the idea of trading my A9 & A7iii in on an A7V.

It would join my A7Riii as my only cameras that see use except for my SD1000's which are always available for dirty duty.
Would an A7 V really be that much better than an A9? If I had an A9 and A7R III and appropriate lenses, I would find it difficult to need much else for photography. Video is another matter, but those two would surely take care of your photographic needs.

Still giving me GAS right now:

The Samyang 35-150mm f2-2.8 for L mount. I could use that one lens instead of a 24-105 on one body and a 35/2 on another. Awesome for indoor basketball.

The Panasonic Leica 100-400mm f4.5-6.3 for micro four thirds. Pairing that with my G9 would give me the reach I need for the far side of football ovals, given that I am shooting more and more field sports these days.

The A7 V would give me crop ability that the A9 doesn't. It also shoots almost as fast as the A9 so I wouldn't be giving up much there but would be gaining the pre-shot ability. I think it's a good combination of things that would compliment the A7Riii's capabilities nicely.

A black Nikon SP 🥵

Incidentally I just bought a black Nikon F2 with DE-1 finder recently. A bit dirty after having sat unused so off to CLA it goes.

My ebay watchlist has the same old items relisted over and over, and I’m still hoping the prices would go down.

I found the only way to find a plain prison finder for a F2 at a reasonable price is to buy one on a camera so I now have two F2 cameras. I pretty much have examples of most of the cameras I ever lusted after so don’t really need more. That being said I do find myself looking at the listings for a Nikon S3 2000 (a black one would be nice) and certainly don’t need it but a nice silver Leica R8 seems like a camera I should have

At present I’m hankering for an original Canon F-1. My local repair fellow has a number of ‘parts’ F-1s sitting on the floor of his home-based shop, one of which is an original F-1. No prism and the film advance lever is sticky, but the speeds all sound okay and cosmetically it’s not too bad (I’m not sure, however, if he already took any parts from this ‘parts’ body, so I’d have to see about that). He’s considering what he’d charge me for the body to be revived and I’d need to find a prism. Fortunately I have a few FD lenses sono worries there. Of course maybe I should just put my AE-1 to more use then I wouldn’t need the F-1 at all, but where’s the fun in that?
First time I’ve ever responded to my younger self (yes three weeks younger!) but I changed my mind about a Canon F-1. I realized that I should be putting my AE-1 to more use. However, my camera repair fellow has a dusty Ikoflex IIa that’s been sitting on his shop floor for what looks to be quite a while. It’s tempting as I miss shooting with a TLR.

Viltrox, a new member of the L-mount alliance, debuted a 16mm f1.8 lens that has been reviewed favorably and is relatively inexpensive at under $600 USD. It has been available in Z- and E-mount along with other focal lengths, so it will be interesting to see what else they offer for L-mount. I’ll likely get the 16mm 1.8 as the last lines of resistance melt away.

Hey Vince,

As I've mentioned in previous posts, I had this beautiful Canon F-1n back in the day:

CanonF1.jpg

I really loved that set up, but unfortunately it is now long gone. I still have the glass though.

Taking this Canon AE-1Program I was gifted, and mating it with a Canon Motor Drive MA, and using that original glass, it's not "as good" but it's pretty darn close. And the images it makes are identical.

Now I can't drive nails with the AE-1Program like I could with the Canon F-1n, but I've got a hammer for that now. 😛

I think your Canon AE-1 will do you fine, unless you're building a house.

Best,

I have an 8 and am wondering which of the latest generation iPhones have the best cameras. Presumably any of them has a better camera than the 8. I don't need anything in a phone beyond the basics.
The latest iPhone XX Pro model typically has the best camera system. I think that's the iPhone 17 Pro now.
I am using an iPhone 15 Pro at present. The camera is excellent, with both the Apple Camera.app and with the Moment Pro Camera II.app. This latter permits raw file capture and precise control of the camera system, albeit it does not do the "continuous zoom" integration of the Apple Camera.app. There are a few other interesting camera apps as well that push the camera to do more than the Apple Camera.app does.

(And if you like an occasional bit of video, I am very fond of the "8mm vintage movie camera.app".
And "Reel Director" to put photos and videos together for presentation.. )

Never understand put a plain prism on F/F2, just get a FM or FM2 light compact, durable and excellent meter system. I have no idea why people pay big money for my viewfinder even does not have a meter build in🤣🤣🤣

View attachment 4885422

Because none of the others have that cool big "F" logo on them!

I also enjoy shooting pure mechanical cameras with no electronic (and thus no meters), so I want the plain prism F even though I have two perfectly good FEs.

I've never had an FE, but have had an FM for thirty years now. It's a nice camera, but the shutter sound, compared to the sound of a Nikon F shutter, is horrid. Every time I use it I'm reminded of how much I hate the sound of that shutter. It sounds plastic, and rattly and junky. The camera works fine, and the pictures are just as good as ones taken with the F, but the experience is nowhere near the same.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Best,

Yeah that Canon F-1 you had is a beauty. I did happen to get the Winder A for my AE-1 for $20 and it’s a nice addition.

I feel a bit conflicted about the Ikoflex as I had a rather good Ikoflex II (lever focus) that I recently sold to a friend of mine as well as a Rolleiflex Old Standard. I think it’s a case of not wanting unnecessary cameras sitting around unused and then later on lamenting my having sold them.

OMG I hear you. My wife keeps giving me a hard time when I start longing for a camera I had, then sold. She's always like, "Then why did you sell it." And it's always the same thing, I don't like having good cameras sitting around when they're not getting used.

I'm down to "bare bones" right now, only half a dozen film cameras and even fewer digital ones. Trying to mellow. We'll see how successful that is.

Best,
-Tim
