The button will only depress and fire the shutter very infrequently.
As there is no shutter lock on this model can any one suggest the cause and a cure? The shutter will release when the . for R is selected.
Many thanks.

Is the self timer partially engaged?

Thanks for the suggestion. The answer is no.
On only one occasion has the self timer released the shutter.
Thanks again.

Hi Rover
I've just found that the shutter will always release so long as thumb pressure is kept on the winding lever.,

Unless you are comfortable taking the top cover off, or getting into the shutter, I'd suggest a CLA. I believe DAG and Sherry Krauter both work on the P. Youxin Ye (?) may as well, and he is very reasonable. Essex Camera seems to get somewhat less enthusiastic review, but they seem to be reliable.

I had the same issue with mine P I got it CLAed along with lens. The repairman told me he just had to remove rust from everything underneath topcover, it seems impossible since the VF was and still is crystal clear. I wouldn't try to solve it by putting tension on advance lever, it's better to locate actual problem and fix it.

Thanks for the replies.
The problem appears to be a mechanical slackness in the wind-on system as there is also a bit of slop in the lever itself. I wonder if there is an exploded view of the relevant parts in a Canon P Repair Manual.
I agree a trip to the camera doctor may be called for.
