The rubber lens hood, / filter retainer on my 40mm Summicron died yesterday, it just fell to bits as I unfolded it. Age I think, (same as me!!) I had a close look at the threaded bit that was left and wondered if I could do anything with it. I placed it for a couple of hours in Nitro Mors paint remover, lo and behold the remaining rubber fell off which after a good wash left a black anodized ring which I screwed back onto the lens to hold the filter in place.. I then noticed that it had a groove running around the outside of it, ah ha!! I tried the ventilated clip-on lens hood for the 35/50 lenses, it fits , not tightly but secure enough that it wont fall off so I can now use that hood instead.
Might be of help??

Yes its 39mm but a different pitch from the normal 39mm (E39) filter thread.
The normal filter will screw in a little, but is very liable to jam, I know I've been there !!!!!!! Thats why I was glad it was possible to rescue something from the wreck of the old hood.

Dear John, et al:

Do I have a deal for you....

Having had the same dilemma, and being unfortuantely a perfectionist by nature, you may wish to consider this option...which is very good.

Otherwise, there is a guy on the auction site based out of japan. id: redleica1
if I remember correctly....

There is a rather well known lens hood solution that people are using on this lens made by "heavystar" (again, if i remember correctly) a search on "the auction site" will again yield those results.

They both share either lack of tolerances and/or proper funky 39mm thread to screw in well without issue.

These hoods by the prior fellow are far more attractive, more compact, and more everything.....for $26 shipped. highly recommended if you have not already the rectangular Leica hood (part 12526??).

I, luckily did/do...USe one on the 40mm and the other on the 90/4 elmar that originally came with the CL.

If I could only express to you how many hours of research it had taken me to find this information and reach an admirable solution....sigh.

I feel confident and completely safe in telling you, these are, without question, the best solutions available for the C-series lenses. Period.

Best regards..
D

I've been using a Redleica1 tapered hood on my 40 Cron with good results...

John, I was hoping the ring was a more standard thread than the hood itself - I never thought to look.

Dear Kith and kin John,

Hope to see more of your extraordinary pictures! Especially the industrial impact of decay, etc. Loved those.

Regards from the straying branch.

Dear John

I like your avatar! We are cat people so I can really feel for your poor beastie with the sore tail. BTW, I think I finally [after seveal years!] figured out how to use an avatar. Hope this shows one on my post. Please advise.
Regards,

John E.L.

Oh God!!! My son says we even look quite like each other, thats really scary!!!! You have a tad more hair than me though!!! I'm 62 in April so will soon look like a pool ball!!!

We have two cats who both adopted us, they had been abandoned by their owners. how can people do that????

Denzil the one with tail trouble has "attitude" the other Oskar is a huge softie, he is enormous, my grandson thinks he is a young panther. they have a special relationship, Ross can do anything with Oskar and never gets a scratch!!
Best to all
