The D200 actually is a great cam with a good viewfinder. It's an excellent Choice for digital shooting without a doubt.
 
I don't think anyone can help with which gear to get - you've had an M2 so you know more than anyone else about how comfortable you felt with that.

I'd keep the Nikon stuff - now that you've got it. It's not bad and can come in useful. You want to keep some paying customers, don't you?

Actually, I've been seeing a lot more Nikon gear on the streets recently. A while back it was only Canon, on Saturday I only saw Nikons!

I had a look at your website and really liked the "My Father" series. Definitely looks like you want an M for that sort of stuff.

Can't contribute to that other stuff. I only speak Indoeuropean 😕

Thanks, but that "my father" set is not mine -- that set is from the other strap-photos.com member, Jussi Leinonen 🙂

About D200 viewfinder; nothing wrong with it if you use af-lenses, but like I said earlier -- I personally find it very difficult to focus with manual focus lenses (there is a big difference in actual use when compared to other gear I have used which are Leica M2, Nikon F5, Olympus OM-1, Nikon FM-2). These are my personal opinions of course, but if someone is thinking of buying D200 for manual focus use, I would strongly recommend testing it in real life shooting situations before buying... (I didn't had the opportunity to do that when I bought mine and seconds after the first test with my mf20/f2.8 lens I knew that I was in some kind of trouble ).

D200 image quality is just fine (often "too" good, because I prefer grainier look), build quality very good etc... But it is just not what I want.

It looks like my D200 is now sold and I have plans for my Leica thing... 🙂 I'll keep my FM-2 nikon and lenses at the moment.

I believe there was some software from Kodak that would automatically add scratches, dust and grain to your digital files. It can also stick "negatives" together, lose and misfile them.

Hello all. I'm new here.
Not quite sure what's going on here in this thread but I'll just say that I haven't had a thrill from a digital camera yet to match getting the newly dev'd film off a reel. I'm a photographer for a living and all clients want digital but for pictures of friends and family and my life it's a little film camera and a bit of concentration all the way.

Yeah, I sold my 5D yesterday

I just couldn’t take feeling guilty anymore for my photos turning worse and worse, even though I only shot with L primes. It’s too easy to just snap with digital without looking and thinking. When I woke up this morning, my wife said that I looked especially good (yeah baby). She said that I looked less stressed and relieved.
If I were in photography business that required a digital, I’d still have the 5D. In fact, it’s probably the best digicam on the marked (being full-frame for the money). It still remains digital though, which for me translates into worse photographs than I believe that I’m capable of.
Plus, now I have some cash to add to my Bessa R3A with a 40mm Nokton and finally complete a dark room.
Long live Film!!!

Hey Roma. It's true. I feel there's something very bad for the soul about seeing images so soon after they were taken (digital). Imagine the classic Cartier-Bresson shot of the man leaping over the puddle having been shot on digital. The reaction when shown the back of the camera would have been: oh yeah, good one. Anyway, let's go and get a coffee.

Wouldn't an M3 rule out a 35mm lens without goggles?
 
I would seriously look at a Bessa body and CV lens if that's what you have to spend. The lenses are excellent and the bodies will do everything you would want. If I had a little more money I would buy a new ZI and ZM lens. Both are better values and the ZI is a spectacular camera. I have 6 M's (m2, M3, M6 and 3 MP's) plus a ZI and find mysdelf using the ZI much of the time. I've used M's for nearly 40 years and love them but the ZI RF/VF is second to none and the metering is dead on too. I actually like the Zeiss lenses better than my Leica glass and have started building a set of ZM glass. I'm eagerly awaiting the 85 sonnar.
 
Magus don`t get too loose! biogons are great but there is something in biogon 35mm I don`t like, so keep up, don`t give up so easely (even though x-ray is mighty photographer and your wine mate 😀 😀 😀 )

while i gave up DSLR by selling exactly the D200, it was not the _digital_ part of that machine that i objected - it was it being an SLR.

i just don't like the mirror, it seems, and i definitively missed the rangefinder (still i found the D70 a very useful tool). but from the moment i owned a digi cam, i stopped using my M6. and you know what? i do not miss darkroom days, i do not miss scanning boredom - and i do not miss chemical "quality".

i admit, the epson i use these days has some flaws, but it gives me the combination of "rangefinder" and "digital" that does it for me. M8 only being out of my affordability range ...

just a different opinion.

as far as i can see, best would be to try out a digital RF for a while, but i never heard of a rental service.
but at the same time, i can't find anything wrong with your plan to get back into the film hassle.
