Just bought the camera from a forum member. I loaded a roll of Fuiji Superia film which I have never used before. As I press the shutter and advance the film, the frame counter is not changing....it stays on S. So, I opened the back door and tried it...and the film is advancing. Why would it not display the frame counter accurately ?

there is a small lever/pad in the light seal track along the top edge of where the back door meets the body (on the right hand side-ish).

I believe that is responsible for resetting the frame counter. Maybe it's gunked up, or sealed over?

So is this finally the answer to my "wtf is a 'pad of death'" question?

Nope - the POD is different. That's a bumper of 2mm rubber inside the camera top, which serves some inscrutible, but apparently critical function during the shutter reset (on wind). When that doesn't reset properly the whole camera goes wonky and acts up.

kennyg,

It could be that the counter mechanism is simply stuck, or the ratchet that drives it round is out of whack - I have seen both in old G series bodies. It really means taking the top plate off, but that's not too difficult. Have a search around here or google for the Yashica service manual (it's on Roger's site a provins, or something similar).

Relatively easy to spot what's going on - if you need any parts PM me.
