I'm going to bed now. I wouldn't be surprised if this thread is locked or (more likely) deleted when I get up tomorrow.
Stephen we all know this is now your site and do what you like. I'm what, half your age? You don't want advice from me. So I'll try not to offer any.
EDIT: I like Philipp's idea. Maybe if we had a members-only noticeboard that is locked and only editable by mods, and there's a list of thread deleted when and why. Or simply a shotgun fire and someone shouting "I'm givin y'all 30 seconds to get out of this thread before I blow it sky high" or something equally redne-... sorry I'm not allowed to say that.

My Red Dot Glows For You
Let me say something clearly: I'm not for anarchy; everybody has a right to say anything, and to have ideas in their head about what other say. Fine.
What I have an issue with is the typical knee-jerk reactions. And typical reactions I've seen here.
And out of respect I won't publicly scold somebody in public for their lack of respect towards somebody else, no matter who I think I am.
It's high drama when things get censored, and things fly off the handle when people just won't stop and read and understand what others are saying, and immediately put their own prejudices in front of it.
Deleting a thread is a bad pill. Just lock it. One-liners as an explanation leave more questions than answers. If people don't want feedback at all, then just say so. Public scoldings don't strengthen authority, they diminish respect.
And now I'll flip the channel and look at the gallery.

Amen. Experience on various forums suggests, unless a thread is illegal in some way, deleting it is always the wrong answer. Locking, OTOH, has its uses.Gabriel M.A. said:Deleting a thread is a bad pill. Just lock it.

I don't know, I don't really care much about perceived censorship on a privately owned site. What pisses me off is that a longstanding member and one of the better photographers here has been pretty much called a sicko for asking a simple question. Seems like a line has been crossed. Just my 2 cents.

I just hate censorship in any shape or form because I object to someone superimposing his/ her standards over mine and it is so often abused by religious zealots and /or governments. I am my own censor.
However, in this case/ topic, I think maybe Utube, etc. are a better place for this "genre" of photos.

Reading the posts, it's clear to me (yet again) that censorship is rarely the best course of action, and is the cause of just more problems.

The original post was a little off tempo but I was not offended by it in any way. I was going to post somthing like a warning that in todays climate hanging around a bathroom with a camera could lead to a court case in a shopping mall but in Rave Clubs and other places where people weirdly linger in restrooms or anywhere that is adults only I thank it would be fine. One photographer in Bangkok has taken many restoom pictures in the redlight district and some of them were disturbing but it documented what was happening and I believe it was a wake up call for some concerning AIDS so I found value in his work.
At this point the whole situation has gone badly and it seems the forum might loose a couple valuable members. The best thing for the moment is those who were offended should just send private messages to the offending party and try to work things out. I see this as one great big misunderstanding and hope that this becomes a learning lesson and not another exedus of valuable members which both Ash and Jon are.

You could only be your own censor on your own forum - this is not a "public" forum owned by everyone. The owner is Stephen and he does have the right to do what he thinks is right - even if it upsets everyone on his forum!
Don't get me wrong, I don;t think what Stephen did was right - I believe he reacted without much thinking about it and maybe even without reading the OP's entire thread.
On the other hand, the OP did indeed imply that he already picked a public restroom which was next to a busy bus-terminal which would insure that people would have to use it and give him the opportunity to take pics. I can understand why Stephen would not want any of this on the RFF.
I hope Jon will not be (has not been) banned from this site - that would make things just worse.
I do think Stephen needs to come back and lay out his point of view, now that he had some time to cool off.

I pay to be a supporter of this forum; I don't pay to have it censored no matter what. Even if you disagree with my opinion, are argumentative, anything short of name calling and trolling I am fine with. I am not fine with this.
Beautiful picture Ash. I think it makes the point. I had a female friend that did an art project once in women's bathrooms that was quite interesting, but I guess not interesting for RFF. I am curious what will be deleted next?

Paid...past tense. There are no more "sponsors" save the vendors who support the forum. Park your high horse and get over it.

No, Jon was not banned. No, I did not say Jon was a sicko. I did say a thread about photography in a public rest room is. I would be surprised if local law enforcement in most cities would look kindly upon it either. People have a right to have privacy in public rest rooms -- not a photographer taking pics.
RFF rules prohibit offensive posts -- granted that be be difficult to always define
see
http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/faq.php?faq=vb_faq#faq_new_faq_item2
And as you read further down
"What happens if I break a rule?
The administrators and moderators of RFF have the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread or post, or suspend or ban any member for any breach of the rules or for any other reason with or without warning or notice."
In short, at RFF people are expected to follow RFF rules for a better community.
Is everyone going to be happy about every rule or every administrative or moderator's action? Not likely. Is everything perfect? No. But in the long run we will hopefully end up with a better more civilized forum which stays focused on photography, not flames, not arguments, not pissing contests.

I realize that bounds must be drawn, but from the discussion prior it would seem that public opinion is not in favor of considering talking about how to properly 'do' restroom photography an offensive subject.
If the management feel the offending thread to be offensive I for one wish to have been knowledgeable about these sentiments before the deletion of the offending thread and not now at 19:45 (US CST, -6 GMT) at least seven hours after the first question as to where the offending thread disappeared to.
The hasty deletion of this thread and silence afterwards has left some choice incendiary words to be thrown around this forum in a fashion that is abhorrently shameful and ill-representative of this forum.
With the knowledge that this thread is a public forum that can be viewed by all including non-members, I am disgusted that these sentiments ever needed to be stated.
Maybe my seventeen-year-old self is in the technical wrong, but is it not possible that our (Though I am sure that after this whole ordeal some might wonder if it is still our discussion forum) forum's rules could use a 'moral' change so that the deletion of a thread is not left to speculation.
Hopefully Ash will wake up and continue his with his brilliant and throughly well-founded discussion under better terms with a few significant others.

Here's how it is folks........ This is a PRIVATE FORUM. I think some forget this fact more often than not. Another thing, it's not Stephen Gandy or CameraQuest "sponsorship" it's Stephen Gandy "OWNERSHIP" Ownership has it's privelages. Bathroom photography, you're kidding right? If this is a personal project than keep it personal.
Grow up some of you!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bang: Ash is 19 and gets a pass for being young and idealistic. But some of you are old enough to know better, or at least you should.
You can always go the other RangeFinder Forum......... Oh yeah that's right there isn't one, than just GO AWAY
So many other topics to discuss and photos to share

Who do YOU think you are? The discussion has been rather civil (yes, many didn't agree with Stephen's action, but it never got out of hand) and all of a sudden you come out of the woodwork and start accusing people? Go back where you came from!
