Biogon 25 or 28... convince me

I have heard that the Leica M .58 viewfinder works as a a viewfinder for the 25mm.. using the whole thing. Is this accurate?

In the mid 70's I worked 2 years for a contractor for the US government and had a Q clearance and delt with wepons secrets and worked with satellite recon imagery. At that time some was electronic and some film based. We also had some SR-71 film. As sharp as we think or lenses and film are they're nothing like this. The satellite imagery was shot from 100 miles out and a small rodent could be defined in a field. I was told that some of the systems could resolve a golf ball in a field. The SR-71 imagery was all strips of film. If I remember correctly it was 9 inches by some length depending on the area photographed. From 80,000 feet it was easy to tell what people were wearing in a parking lot and the make of cars parked in the lot. You could see if a person was male or female and whether they were dressed in a suit or whatever. The imagery was beyone you imagination! This was technology from 30 years ago so we can only guess what's out there today.

Wow Olsen! What a great read. Thanks for the history. I have and use the Zeiss 21mm 2.8 , the Zeiss 25mm 2.8 and the VC 28 1.9 Ultron. I think each lense has it`s time and place but out of the three I now use the 25mm the most. It was the last of the three that I bought, and the first being the VC. I am hard pressed to find fault with any of them. To be honest , there will be a a M-8 in my future so the 21 and 25 might be, my go to lense with that camera. Good Luck, Saltyfli

Well, fellas, I pulled the trigger. A brand new Zeiss Biogon ZM 25mm/2.8 is on its happy little way to me now. I'll try using it without an external finder for now.

I'm all wet with anticipation! ;)

Yes, unless the 25mm lens is focused very close, but only the Bessa R4 (A or M) will have parallax corrected finder for 25mm lenses.

if you have a 35mm lens get a 25mm, as the 28mm is too close to a 35mm lens.

I would not say so myself - this is personal preference. I would say 25 is the more sensible compliment but 28 and 35 are IMO very different. Its the 90mm and 120 on 5x4 and nobody suggests that this is too close!

Ron,

I kmow you are going to love this lens. BTW...you can use the CV 25mm External VF and it's only ~$150 versus over $300 for the Zeiss.

Best Luck,

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this board and i just crashed in as I found this board while searching information on the Ikon... I'm just making the move from Contax G2 & 28mm + 45mm to Zeiss Ikon +25mm (or 28mm...) and I'd like to if you could describe the difference between the camera's own viewfinder and the real 25mm image? Say, in a distance of about 2-3 meters? Can you see the whole area (if you really try to stuff your eye in the viewfinder) or is there a lot of cropping in real life situations?
Best if you could draw a picture! :D

I really like the G's 28mm, so I would be happy with that too, but I have always been wanting a 21mm. Then I realized the 25mm would be the "one lens to have". Years ago, before the G2, I had a Contax RTS II and a 25mm Distagon among others, and I think I used to have that on the camera all the time.

Sorry if this has been discussed in some other thread, but I'm in a hurry. I'll have to do the search a bit later. I may have to do some financial decisions soon...

25 or 28

I would suggest going with the widest lens that your camera shows in the view finder unless you do not mind using an aux. viewfinder. M8 is 24 mm, M2 is 35, others Leicas can be found on the Leica site or other places on the web.

Just out of curiosity, GaryB, and not to challenge your statement above, but what lens is that on the CL in your avatar picture?

Thanks,
Randy

The lens on my CL is a Canon 19mm LTM with the 19 finder. Sometimes you just have to use an aux. finder.
