75mm CV Heliar vs 90mm CV Apo Lanthar

Hi,

i love the wide angle lens and above all the 35mm and the 50mm , now i would to buy a mid tele to take some portraits and complete my equipment.

I've seen the 75mm heliar , very compact and enough fast, and the 90mm Lanthar a razor but slow and very fat to be a lens for RF.

Which one do you've?

I have both and think they are great value for the money. The Lanthar is not much bigger than the 75, it's only its hood, which makes it look so much longer on pictures. The Lanthar is one sharp lens.
Sean Reid's recent comparison of the CV75 with the 75 Cron asph almost sent a shock wave through the Leica community since the inexpensive CV performed on par in almost all aspects with the 9 times more expensive Leica. I think his comparison of 90 lenses, incl the Lanthar, will be published soon and might surprise Leicaphiles as well.

I currently have both, the 90 is very sharp and although not that fast it focuses well on my Bessa R pretty well wide open at closer distances, something that the Bessas can struggle with with faster apertures than F3.5 on a 90. The 90 is also very light.

The 75 is my prefered focal length for a two lens outfit with the other one being a 35 Ultron. I really like this length and am tending to use it more often than the 90. Again the fastest aperture of F2.5 works within the limits of the Bessas RF base length.

I was about to suggest what Fred already has done: a fast 35 and a 75 and that's that. If you always carry a 50, then a 90 might make more sense since a 75 would be too close.

I've got the 75/2.5 but not the 90. The 75 is my least used focal length but it is still my favorite for portraits. I haven't used mine in over a year but broke it out yesterday and am once again really impressed with the results (below).

I'm not a fan of the 75 or 90 framelines on the Leicas so thats probably the reason I haven't used it much, it's a great lens with outstanding bokeh when shot wide open.

I have the 75 and it is quite good, I'd just like the higher magnification of the 90mm for portraits.

Fabri, I don't think there is any Russian/Ukrainian 75 mm lens. There is, though, the 85/2: which is said to be excellent provided that you find a good example.

I have what I believe to be an excellent copy of the J9. I cannot match the cv75mm for sharpness. That's not to say it isn't worth shooting with. Sharpness is not always the object.

I owned the 75VC, thought it was outstanding in bulid and imagery, but did not like the FL. I guess one could get used to it. I sold it to cover 75 Summilux acquistion - a great disappointment. The Lux to heavy and way too big. In hindsight I should have kept the 75VC.

I use my 50 (cron & lux) for portraits, so after careful analysis of 90 Cron and 90 Elmarit-M (current),I decided to go for the 90/2.8 Elmarit-M. The 90 EL-M is dangerously sharp and I preferred its ergonomics. This one is chrome and I like it because the extra weight adds to cam stability. I shoot fast film to avoid camera shake, prferring 1/500 at f/4.

All these are excellent performers, depends more on what works for you.
