The R-D1/nokton 40... love it!

So I've had the epson for almost 4 months now, and have tried a small plethora of lenses, but this weekend at the company party... R-D1, nokton 40 1.4, iso 800, turned up some nice stuff...

Very, very nice, Ivan, thanks for posting. Perfect catch of her eyes in the first shot.
It's a Nokton alright (the slightly eliptical donuts in the corners are typical,
obviously more visible on full format, also for the 50/1.5).

Hey thanks Roland, it's the MC. I hear there's really no difference, but I'm prety happy to own it 😀 I may eventually get a 35 1.2, but I probably don't need to... I think the 40mm FOV crop is is ok for people shooting.
 
There is no difference to these eyes, with my two lenses 🙂

Half a stop slower, but so much smaller 🙂 I love the .7m min. focus distance.

I love that first one as well.
And I can see that you are using it for club shots as well. I bought the 40mm for those times when my 35mm PII is too slow, and I want something a little wider than the 50mm.
 
love the shots - esp the out of focus highlights in the second. I can see why she caught your eye 😉

I prefer 40mm to 35mm for people 'cos of the tighter framelines - more accurate with the 40mm.

No, was comparing the 40/1.4 to the 35 Nokton.

I thought hard before deciding between the two. Size won in the end
and bokeh for my eyes is nice (as your pictures show).

The 40 Nokton "glows" a bit wide open, you can see it in the hairline
of the girl in your second photo ....

what lovely images. the first looks so smooth then the second is suddenly grainy, hmm. maybe you pushed up those shadows? anyway, I gonna purchase nokton 40mm and summicron/rokkor 40 🙂 you got me in it 🙂 thanks for posting. want see more such 1.4 images ..
 
that be iso 800, 1600. Raw. earlier shots were taken in vegas. Lots of tungsten light around, but I don't mind it. The noise is OK, IMO. I'm used to noise err, I mean grain, I've been shooting film for many, many years and grain is a part of my life...

Magenta cast? Not to these eyes. I thought that was the exclusive province of the M8 anyway. 😉 And so far as I know all sensors are noisy, er - grainy, at ISO 800-1600. These are the kind of shots I love the R-D1 for, with the 40 Nokton or the ZM 50 Sonnar. Nice, Ivan.

It finally occurred to me to play with the 35 Summilux ASPH on the R-D1 and so far I am not loving it - gimme the Nokton or Sonnar!

When judging lighting balance, it's a good idea to be able to recognize mixed lighting and artificial lighting in a photo. The shots in the first post show how well the R-D1 does in such a mixed lighting scene. The 3rd shot shows a magenta cast because of the magenta gel on the stage spotlights.

There are a couple free sites such as photobucket and flickr that you can host your pictures on.
 
dunno about you guys but on my calibrated screen, the first pic is definitely showing a slight cast issue. The girl's arm is in the same direction as her face and should be receiving the same light source, yet its obvious that the faces of both the girl and guy has a very harsh and ugly magenta tone to it. As for noise levels, i have shot a 20D and 5D at similar ISOs with much better noise control. I agree that those of us (myself included) who started off shooting film would be used to it, but i having heard the rave reviews of this cam, i was expecting it to be somewhat better than this. just my 2c worth of course. Its no doubt still a very useable camera.
 
well, you can't always please everyone, especially the die hard, arrogant canon shooters 😀

I did not start this thread to compare, or brag. Simply stating the R-D1 coupled with the nokton classic 40mm is a great combo. Now, as for the magenta cast, he's a white guy, from Virginia, she's got a bit different pigment, she's african american... also there are about 5 different light sources hit them both.
