Dear Laurance,

With all due respect, have you ever actually USED a Noctilux?

Because I have, and although I've not taken all that many good pictures with one, the only drawback to the Noctilux is that I'm not a better photographer.

I have however had a sufficiently high proportion of pics that I really like from a borrowed Noctilux -- rather more than I get from most lenses -- that if I could afford one, I'd buy it tomorrow.

Gabor, Helen, i'm thinking on it -- just still can't make up my mind between the M3 or the M2.... this week i'm going to check them out and see what's around and feels right. later in the week i have a meeting, scheduled by somebody who likes my work.... we'll see what comes of that and it might me push me in one direction or another (or something altogether different).

Actually I'm really not that HAPPY w/ the M8
a) its interfering with my M2
b) its gorgeous and in EXC/mint condt for 2500.00
the Files are Lovely
but somehow I FEEL Flat with it


Eric says give it more Time
and I think sell it
and get a sonnar lens, more film or even a hassy 500cm oy mamiya 6

i'm with Eric on this. you haven't given it enough time -- you never do! i spend more time getting used to a new lens than you do a camera 😱 i'm not saying the M8 is the bees knees, nor that it's the right one for you. just think you need to play around more before you make your decision.

and i see no reason why you need to neglect your M2 in the process. there are a lot of people who shoot both film and digital at the same time. i plan on keeping and using my Epson right along with whatever M i chose.

the Sonnars are gorgeous, you know i've always said i thought you should have one but not necessarily now. NO MORE CAMERAS! you're still learning your M2 for goodness sake :bang:

Fine Join the Eric Club...hmmm
No seriously , there is a major snowstorm here Today
So I am taking the Day Off and shooting w/the M2 all day
Shooting Film is more meditative for me
I'm not a Fan of being bogged down with equipment
so only one camera for me to carry on the Streets

Mind you Eric has an rd1 so I didn/t need to keep the rd1s
and NOT to sound Purist but I LOVE FILM
Digital is TRES Coool and has its place
but when I see a print next to a digi print
(NO I don't do printing...send out)
I'm Floored be it in the Contrast, Details or overall
Atmospheric Vibe
its just sooo addictive & BEAUTIFUL
and finally Developing is Fun

anyway I'll still play with the M8
try the shutter firmware upgrade etc and see 🙂

don't be mad at me -- i'm just thinking he's kind of right. you should at least count to three. i agree with you on the quality of film, but.... digital has its place. i've allowed myself to play and experiment far more that i ever would have with film. if meditative shooting works better for you -- fantastic. i'm better working fast reflexes and immediate response: digital allows me to hone it.

I found film (especially BW films like Tri-X) much easier to use for fast shooting and immediate response because light usually doesn't change that much within a certain time and wrong exposure settings (+/- two f-stops) are well covered by the dynamic range. On the other hand, I wouldn't trust AE that much (especially under critical light conditions) and the image sensors are less forgivable.

... of course just my two cents 🙂

that's why i'm looking to get a film camera :angel:
 
Cam: What i meant by Meditative
was Capturing the Moment with quick response
like a Zen Painter contemplates (Sees)
and creates the image in a Split second

I suppose Maddoc/Gabor put it more Scientifically

There is currently one at Adorama for $4.5K. About a month ago it was a thousand higher.

A few months ago, at B&H they sold a Noct for $4K. It didn't last though.

Please realize these are both New York prices that tend to be inflated. My experiance with Adorama is if I offered $4k for their Noct in person, I would have a high probability of getting it after having observed price drops.

Being in New York, and showing up in person has its advantages. Good Luck.
