1.092 is available

Alright, any info on what the improvements are (besides the immediately visible, evident ones); a link to a document, anyone?

Copied from the PDF file "Instruction Firnware Update":

The following technical features are optimized by the firmware version 1.092:
- In Review mode the bar above the image is black and now includes displays for the
shutter and ISO speeds as well as the image number.
- The clipping function is now accessible directly in Auto Review mode, i.e. without
having to press the INFO button first.
-The color rendition with Adobe Camera Raw was improved.
- If Auto Review and Histogram are both selected in the menu, this is now indicated as ãHold/Histogr.Ò.
- The word "disabled" has been replaced by "off"
- Numerous internal procedures were improved and so-called bug-fixes implemented

Additional notes:
- When updating from 1.09 to 1.092, the camera asks whether the user
wishes to update to version 1.91 (meaning 1.092). This is not an error. After
updating, the menu will display the correct figure ã1.092Ò.
- We recommend not to "downdate", e. g. from 1.092 to 1.09, since this may lead to occasional dropouts.
- The planned adaptation for the use of the special UV/IR filters has not yet been
included in the firmware 1.092. It will be included in the upcoming version 1.10, which we expect to make
available by the middle of April 2007 on the Leica homepage.

Since my M8 is sn NJ for a focus check (it's been two weeks), I wonder if they'll update the firmware?

They don't give us much update on what is actually fixed. Maybe 1.10 will include more information.

Talking about "bug fixes" in detail would be a laundry list of the camera's issues and would open the door for more flame bait and trolling. A blanket statement like this is Leica's safest bet given the current climate with non-M8 users looking for every scrap they can find on this camera.

To date I have had zero issues with my M8 so I will hold off on downloading this until early adaptors report in. Barring any unforeseen hiccups (and I know there will be at least a hand full of knee jerk reactions from people who down load this firmware and then "all hell breaks loose"). The key is to then sit tight and wait to see if these reports are collaborated or if they are remote issues. After the smoke clears we'll have a better idea of what 1.92 is and what it is not. Most importantly we’ll know if it introduces problems that outweigh it’s benefits or if it is safe for mass consumption. This is my standard software “upgrade” policy- firmware, computer app or operating system.

Well, I took my chances and I just upgraded and if nothing else, having the ISO and shutter speed displayed when in the plain review screen is quite handy. I'm also kinda hoping the upgrade might stop the few occassional "crashes" that mean I have to pop the battery out and back in.

Good news for chimpers:
I also notice that when you turn the camera on an press "play" immediately and no longer get the "no image to display" warning. I think it also displys the picture more quickly.

It does; I noticed that too.

I've also noticed that the Auto WB is significantly improved. And I mean significantly, from 1.09 at least. That is most welcome. I *think* I see a slight, however it is, improvement in noise at 1250 (same deal at 2500 so far), but that may just be me. I'll take it for a better spin later this week.

Previewing is faster, and no more grey screen when quitting the menu.

I also hope they have fixed the battery drain issue I've been experiencing. All cameras have some battery drain, but this seems to be a bug, for sure.

Ted, you're right. But it's time for Leica to stop playing it safe and level with everyone who's trying to decide when the camera's stable enough to buy. I've reached the point where I'm satisfied that the IR filter is a fair tradeoff for the extra image quality the thin sensor filter seems to produce. After working with several of Jaap's .DNGs I'm also satisfied that clipping some highs in the raw capture is acceptable. But there are still some repetitive problems that need to be resolved. The camera's tendency to lock up, requiring battery removal, for instance. My confidence in Leica would be improved if they'd list the problems they're working on, tell what they plan to do to solve each one, and give us an idea of when they expect the solutions to be available. You happened to get what sounds like a very good copy of the M8, but you'll have to admit that releasing a camera with this many problems was a bad choice. They admitted they screwed up. Now they need to be specific about how and when they're going to fix the screwups. Saying this probably makes me a "troller," but I can live with that.

Rus,
Your point is well taken and correct it is time for Leica to stop playing it safe. However in my mind this does not include handing ammo to the enemy as this is all a laundry list would achieve. Given your pragmatic nature you will not be satisfied, and rightly so, until empirical evidence is produced to the contrary of the running banter. This in turn will not happen until sufficient adaptors take the plunge with 1.92 and report back- say 45 days allowing for the knee jerk reactions to the negative to weigh against long(er) term feedback. I also believe that by issuing a 1.92 interim "fix" and then a measured 1.10 fix to come in April or May Leica is indeed taking the high road by getting feedback on 1.92 so 1.10 can be all it can be. Had Leica been playing it safe they would have waited for 1.10. I also believe that the 1.92 release is against Leica's druthers and had it not been for pressure here on RFf and other forums we would have waited for the mother of all firmware updates before getting anything at all- perhaps 1.10 or even 1.15.

Kudos to Leica.

I'm relieved to see Leica has issued any firmware update at all. I see over on the L.U.F. they've already set up a thread for people to report on any potential bugs, and it seems to be receiving a fair bit of input from those who've installed 1.092. I'm hoping that 1.093-1.099 will each solve more and more bugs and produce less and less new ones so that 1.10 is a rousing sucess. Then I will buy myself an M8.

I got my M8 about 2 weeks ago, and I'm very happy with it. It's such a pleasure to be shooting photos with this camera. Unlike a lot of people in this forum I haven't experienced any of the hick-ups that everybody is talking about, and I made a ot of images so far.
The only thing that bugged me from the start was that, overall the photos had a magenta cast in them and the white balance was not very reliable.
Today I dowloaded and instaled the new firmware and I'm happy to say that the magenta cast is completely gone, after 160 photos not once the WB failed and the photos look a bit more vivid.

I love this camera
