"100 Days of Protests" Photobook

From a friend north of the US, good luck Giganova! I enjoy the pictures, and they serve a great purpose as an instrument of documentation. :)

I am sorry to report that we didn't reach the Kickstarter fundraising goal. $3k were pledged -- which is amazing! -- but in the end, I have to admit that I set the goal ($8k) too high.

But all is not lost: I am looking into self publishing now and are searching for a good printers to make this book a reality. If you guys have recommendations regarding a printer, please let me know.

Stay tuned!

I chose self publishing and are making steady progress on the book:

I made a selection of the 100 best photos, one for each day of "100 Days of Protests". My niece (a gifted writer who has a degree in human rights) is finalizing the text of the book. I am playing with a mockup of the book with little paper thumbnails of the photos and text placeholder (total fun, see below!) and started the design in Adobe InDesign. Received a few offers from printers, with a wide range of prices (about a factor of three!). Went to my bank today and they gave me a healthy line of credit for the book, so financing of the book is secure, yeah! I secured the web site domain and we are starting to design the web pages where people can share their experience, upload their own articles, and including an merchandise plugin so people can buy the book directly from the site.

Still have to decide hard bound vs soft bound, foil stamp on the cover, image on the cover? Choices, choices, choices! :D

How do you like the covers of the books below? I think the Ed Ruschka design is wonderful!

I'm entering the proposal/discussion late, but I hope you will find a way to fund this PJ project that will allow RFF colleagues to support it in exchange for the kind of perks you offered in the Kickstarter campaign. At the front end or at the back end.

As for covers, these models are more similar than varied, so it is graphically/structurally clear what you want. Considering cover color--given the subject matter-- I can't help suggesting that a meditation on what you'd convey by choosing red, or white, or blue would be worthwhile. For me (and only for instance), the polarizing choice between a traditionally republican red and a democratic blue (lower case emphasis here) is avoided by using white for purity of intent, for ideals, etc. But in another way, red simply says Look At Me! And that is important in a bookstore.

Keep us posted. My partner and I will want a copy. And thanks for going high and keeping it there when some of our colleagues wanted to go low.

Files are off to the printer, I already received electronic proofs and 500 copies of the book should arrive in six weeks. :D

Congratulations and best of luck, PM me when you start selling them, I'll take one.

(I assume you're going to place an add in the classifieds here)

I see no point in arguing the book/document itself. It records a large group of people partipating in a series of events/actions.

The thread, the original author and the book offer a set of valuable lessons. For those interested in a career path in documentary work or photojournalism there is the ever important DO step. Wherein the individual, at some point, must start producing work. Shows, prints books etc. and developing an economic model around the activity. THIS is always valuable to some of us. We pay attention. We see what works and what ideas are out there. Then we borrow ideas and inspirations ourselves and get to work.

Update: The book has been printed and is ready to be shipped to your door!

I received the first batch of the book today and I am very happy how it turned out! 97 pages, hardbound, with 100 b&w photos representing 100 days of protest, including text from my niece Lucia, a human rights advocate and grad student of law.

Please support my project by buying a copy so I can recoup some of the vast expenses.

If you'd like to receive a copy (limited 500 copies edition), PayPal $40.- plus $5.- s/h to giganova@giganova.com and I will send it out to you right away. International shipping is $10.- anywhere in the world.

Thank you for your interest and support!
Stefan

Yawn, it's over, he's been your president for almost 14 months. And yeah, your book is political, not "photojournalism".

Do you mean "partisan" or "partial" maybe? It's hard to argue that a photojournalistic account of political events could be not political.
If what you're complaining about is that this only reflects on side, what would a balanced reportage look like? Should he give equal space in the book to the pro Trump camp? Half the pages? Or by ratio of street presence? By votes?
