The 1000th on my M2 is drastically underexposing. I've shot two exposures sunny day, 16th and 500 (tri-x) and 11 and 1000th to check this. The 1000th gives almost nothing on the negative, whereas the 500th is fine. What gives? Is this an easy fix?

Not unusual for an M needing a normal CLA to run fast at the higher speeds. Typically the slowest speed may run too slow and the highest speeds run too fast.

Typically the higher speeds run show anyway. 1000th of a second may actually be 800th, 500 may run at 450th, etc. and still be within acceptable tolerances. In your case, the higher speeds are apparently below tolerances.

In any case, it sounds like it is time for a CLA.

I had problems at 1/1000 as well. The two curtains weren't in sync and parts of the left side of the frame was underexposed. David Yau did a cla and it tests near perfect now. Should be a simple job I'd think.

Hello! I can second BillBlackwell. I had my M2 CLAd recently and the repairman mesured the shutter speeds. The 1/500 is at 1/450 and the 1/1000 is at 1/800. So I have to calculate these real speeds at expusore settings when I need the very fast speeds.
Using TriX or XP2 it is no harm because of the lattitude of the film.

Well, it was CLA'd last august. I will send it to someone to get adjusted. I'm reluctant to send it to DAG, he's had my M6 for 2 months for RF alignment. I will contact Youxin for an adjust.

Waaaaaaay back when I was in Physics 101 I had project where I photo graphed dropped balls lit by a strobe to test shutter speeds on various cameras from my fathers camera collection. Not one even came close to the fastest speed settings. Even his then new Nikon F could only muster 1/800. I would love to see if the new shutters actually can do 1/2000.

These tolerances relate to mechanical shutters. Electronic shutters should be right on the money. If memory serves, Leica’s mechanical Leicaflex and R shutters were within tolerances if 2000th fired at 1500.

I would compare this to a quality watch with a mechanical chronometer, which is within tolerances if it looses a few minutes a month, while an electronic quartz movement would be out of adjustment if it was out (+ or -) the same time in a year.
