120 film: Photolabs in Boston/Cambridge?

Hi,

I was wondering where are good places to get my 120 rolls developed and scanned in the Boston/Cambridge area?
Ever since Ferrante-Dege closed I am lost.....

Joerg I have used Zona on a number of occasions - reasonably near where you live/work. They have the reputation of being one of the best pro labs in the Boston area. They are closing April 14. 🙁 See if you can find out from them who to go to next...

I've heard that there is a place near Brighton Center that still does 120 c-41, but I have not found it yet, I found the ruins of a long dead photo place on a side street, but supposedly there is another place that still exists.
Of all things, I asked at a CVS if they did 120 and they said they do, but they have to send it out instead of doing it in the store.

Hunt's in Harvard Sq sends it out, but I was not impressed, maybe I have to give it a try again.
I have heard about a place close to South Station.....Colortek.

I know Hunt's Photo in Kenmore Square does 120 B+W and Color, but they do send it to another one of their stores to actually do it. It takes a couple days, which isn't too bad. I've only had color stuff from my Holga developed with them so don't really know about b+w and scanning.
 
Joerg, if it's black and white try 'Black and White Inc' on Huntington ave near the symphony. I've been sending my stuff there for a few months and they are good. If it's color try calling Zeff in Belmont, they do decent 35mm color.

ZONA closed April 15th LAST YEAR... 2006!

You should send your 120 C-41 color film out via WAL*MART. They sub it out to FUJI, which does a really good job. They're also pretty inexpensive. My strategy is to have them run the film and then scan it myself.

Color Services in Needham is good, but a bit pricey. I think they charge around $15-20 to soup a C-41 roll and then contact print it.

For the future, I would suggest you call Bill LaPete in 4 Point. He runs a B&W lab. You could have your B&W contact printed there. He also only charges $30 a day for lab rental, which is pretty darn good. 617-338-3836.

You should also start shooting in B&W so that the film manufacturers stay in business!!! The way things are going there might not be any film around in a few years.

Dorian Color Lab in Arlington - I believe it's on Mill Street (right under a hardware store and in front of a Brighams, if that helps). I've not been impressed with their color enlargements, but they've done a good job with 35mm E-6 and C-41.

Ultra Color Lab on Bridge Street in Watertown. Near Russo's - which I highly recommend for fruit, produce, cheese, and the homemade pasta is pretty good, too. Ultra Color Lab is right next door to the car wash and they are kind of easy to miss but do good C-41 work. I think a lot of wedding photographers use/used to use them. No E-6, though.

I used to work for Zona at the old location, and would have recommended them, too, for the dip and dunk systems but they're gone. I wouldn't recommend Ferranti Dege (scratched a bunch of my slides of wild cheetah in Namibia and tried to blame me for it when you could see the horrible mounts). Like many camera shops, there was some serious attitude from the staff - maybe it was a Harvard Square tourists all-day-long thing. I won't miss that lab.

I think Spectrum in South Boston is still going and I'm not sure about ColorTek in Kendall Square, but either one might be worth a look, too.

The one SAM'S CLUB local to the Boston area was in Natick MA and it closed down last year.

I forgot to mention that there is another area lab called LustreColor in Canton MA. They process 35mm and 120 C-41 and offer high res scans on CD.

Originally they were a place where wedding photogs went to have their film souped and printed. That business has gone totally digital. Fortunately, these guys haven't abandoned the wet side of their shop.

It's worth a try and their pricing is not at all bad:

Joerg I would stay far away from colortech. Really they have messed up more than once on color film.
 
Newtonville Camera develops and prints 120 film. Panopticon in Waltham develops and prints black and white film. I have never used their services, but the prints in the gallery are outstanding. It is worth a trip to see the Bradford Wahburn prints of Mt. McKinley.

Just to update folks about Spectrum - we reluctantly stopped processing film in December of 2006. There just was not enough film coming in any more to support the level of our operation.
