120 on LF Camera

Hello:

I have a question. Am I doing a 120 panorama if I'm using a 120 (6x12) SH back on a LF camera? In my case the VC is a 4x5 Graphic.

If Fuji can do it, I don't see why not. That is unless there is some issue with film flatness.

120 film is mediun format and 6x12 is panoramic.

The definition of panoramic is somewhat fuzzy. Basically it is an aspect ratio of 2:1 or greater regardless of the angle of view. A 6x12 back would be "panoramic."

The Shen Hao back and 120 film are fine and regularly used mostly on 4x5 LF cameras. I think they have a wider format for pano which is 6x17. A friend who has used one has noted film plane/flatness issues with this set up.

That 6x12 Shen hao back is a real bargain and built like a tank. I love mine!

Generally I think of pano as wide lens photography but that's not the case. Both Fuji and Linhof make or made, in the case of Fuji made, interchangable lens 6x17 cameras. I think both fuji and linhof had 180mm lenses for them. Also I believe a 135mm is available for the 6x12 linhof. It's more the ratio of the film rather than the lens.

Why not just shoot your 4x5 and crop to the proportion you desire?
Same lens...same light on the film plane....

The convenience, cost and ease of processing 120. One roll will replace three 4x5 holders (six sheets) and you only have to carry one film holder too.

... and more commercial processing options, especially with color film. 4x5 color transparency is still processed by a number of small labs, but that number is dwindling quickly. 4x5 color negative is processed by only a few now. 120 color film is much easier to get processed locally.
