Clip on hood will not fit over a (non-Leica) filter. Where do you buy the 39MM threaded hoods? Or, conversely, what non-leica filter manufacturers make a filter with a small enough ring to accomodate the clip-on leica hoods? Thanks in advance.

Barry, check for an ebay seller called redleica1, he has a quite nice mimic of the 12585 in 39mm screw for a BIN of $15 (he lists them usually).

Barry--gonna try this again as the last post disappeared.
Try one of the knockoff 39mm screw-in shades from Heavystar or whomever. They are ventilated and work great. Also the B+W MRC filters are much less than the E39 leica equivalent.
The 12585 hood is expensive and won't do or look any better than the knockoffs--I have both and the knockoffs work great. will work fine on the new Summicron you have :) :)

What kind of lens do you have, Barry? I put a filter on my collapsible 'cron, then the hood... and it went through! In other words, the hood, wider than the lens rim, got attached to the grooves around the ring as if nothing were there in front of the lens.

Try again... :)

I already have a 12585 as well as a 12384 (?) or whatever the equivilant clip on for my 35MM summicron is. No problem using either of them with the Leica filters. But I have a yellow filter that is a non-Leica and is too wide to accept the hoods. I'm just trying to figure out if it is cheaper to buy a 39MM screw in hood of buy another filter that would fit the hoods I already have. Never dealt with EBAY. Is the Heavystar hood available from a regular retail establishment?
This would be used for an old DR summicron. I'm all set with the new penultimate 50 .......So many summicrons, so little money for accessories...:)

Barry---you can do the buy it now on ebay and it's really a retail transaction. And having so many summicrons is truly a great problem to have!!

I agree w/Paulbe. I used the 12585 back when I had a DR Summicron (I currently have a Rigid of the same vintage) & greatly preferred to use a simple vented screw-in 39mm hood. IMHO, the 12585 was kind of a PITA to use. I do have a bias against clip-on hoods, however, as they never feel entirely secure to me when clipped on. More importantly, though, I didn't find the 12585 to provide any more protection against flare than a screw-in hood despite its significantly greater size. The only neat thing about the 12585 is that it can be reversed on the lens for storage, but since I usually just leave hoods on my lenses & don't use everready cases, that's a pretty useless feature for me.

FWIW, I don't what brand of filter you're using, but I had no problems clipping the 12585 over regular, not extra-slim, B+W & Heliopan 39mm filters.

As far as heavystare & American Eagle (another vendor on eBay who sells similar goods), I've had great experiences w/both of them.

For anyone who might not know what this ponderous hood looks like:

Barry--if you are going to be at wing's some time on Saturday--I can bring one of the heavystars on a 50 as well as a B+W filter and show you what it looks like...let me know...

I have a 50mm Summicron (currently homeless since the M is off being CLAed), one of the 39mm Heavystar hoods (ordered after recommendations from folks here), and just received a dark yellow 39mm B+W filter (which I ordered after coming here with frantic questions about salt water on my lens). Here's what it looks like all screwed together (the cap for the hood is not shown):
